Yeah...the last deal was quite a bit better. 3 movies right off the bat, with the price of one of the movies also being deducted from the total cost. Gotta love sales cart glitches

Also, WTB another buy 2 get 1 free deal

so now i have a dilemma:

Should I take advantage of this deal and get the A20 for ~$310 with two free movies that I really do want?

or should I wait and pay a bit more (most likely) for the A30 with two free movies in the box that I wouldn't mind owning, but don't care all that much about?

Do I get

Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD DVD Player
Our Price: $307.14

or

Xbox 360 HD DVD Player
Our Price: $179.99

I want Halo 3 so I need a 360 anyway, but not sure if the add-on is worth saving the $. I'm also assuming the old HD-A2 is not worth considering.

i'm not so sure that's a valid assumption. if you have a tv/projector that accepts and displays 1080p24, then your assumption is correct - the HD-A2 is not worth considering, because it does not and will not ever have 1080p24 output.

however, if you don't care about 1080p24, the HD-A2 may be a better option than the HD-A20. according to many over at AVS, the HD-A20 produces a better picture when you set it to output 1080i rather than 1080p (referring to 1080p60 in this case). Apparently most displays de-interlace the 1080i signal better than the internal de-interlacing that goes on inside the player as part of its processing to output 1080p. so, if you're going to get an HD-A20 and then set it to 1080i for the best picture quality, you might as well just get the HD-A2 which outputs 1080i max. on the other hand, you'd prevent yourself from 1080p24 capability in the future, if you ever upgrade your tv.

confused and frustrated about which HD DVD player to buy? yeah, me too. to top it off, early word on the HD-A30 is that it has the same 1080p quality issue as the HD-A20.

Thanks, kefrank. As it turns out, I'm putting the cart before the horse and getting the TV later so I should be able to get something good.
