How do you know its not upconverting?

An HD DVD player won't upconvert copy protected DVDs via a component connection, so maybe that's the problem.

After trying it a second time, all is well.

I am connected using HDMI.

Pressing the A20 remote's display button shows the the Video output mode, in this case 1080P.
