Already available on HD DVD in Japan. There are 5 volumes, sold separately.

Considering HD DVD is region free, you could be watching it this time next week if you wanted.

can be ordered from amazon.jp or yesasia.com.

Warner announced this as an HD DVD release at CES 2005, but nothing official has surfaced stateside, and it hasn't come up in any press releases since.

It's not cheap, but a five volume set is out in Japan, if you're willing to import. The audio is in English with no forced subtitles, although some of the extras apparently do have forced Japanese subs.

Edited to add -- beaten to the punch!

Hmm, is it like a bootleg version? Was it released by HBO?

I'd hate to know the price of each (or totaled for that matter).

It's an official Japanese release, but it's not from HBO.

You'd probably be looking at a couple hundred bucks to import all five volumes.

Not a bootleg. Official Japanese release, by the studio who owns the distribution rights there.

On amazon.jp, each set is listed at 3990 yen ($34.60US). When added to the cart it is down to 3800 yen at checkout ($32.95US).

So it'd be $164.75 plus shipping for all 5 volumes.

From Yesasia.com, each set is $38.59, but you can commonly find coupons for Yesasia so it might come out cheaper from them.

Were all of the extras on the US SD release ported over to the Japanese HD releases?

If so, I might put some thought into upgrading. Those screen shots look fantastic.

I'd love to have this as well, but I'll wait to see if it's released over here in HD in a proper box set.

I can't believe my lack of resolve against double dipping now that I'm HD.
