5 New Non-Toshiba HD-DVD Players Coming!

From Robert at Value Electronics, who attended CEDIA.

Here's the list of the new news.

1. All Gen 3 players will be packed with Born Identity and 300. All ValueElectronics.com Gen 3 advance orders qualify for the two additional titles packed with the players.

2. Buy a HD DVD player and the Star Trek box set and their is a mail-in rebate for a Star Trek HD DVD phaser remote control unit, very cool looking and sound effects. All ValueElectronics.com pre-orders are eligible.

3. The 5 free HD DVD movies will be extended till 2/28/08 and new titles are added to the selection. xBox and notebook PC with HD DVD drives will qualify for the 5 free HD DVD movie offer.

4. Just considering Warner, Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks and Dreamworks Animation more than 125 new titles will be release by the end of '07.

5. Shinco, Ventura, Alpine, Onkyo and Integra and the 3 new Gen 3 HD DVD players will all ship by early Q4 '07.

6. Total HD DVD player unit sales are expected to reach more than 30 million stand alone units by the end of ‘07.

7. Amazon and ValueEletronics.com report the A2 is the #1 best seller.

8. According to NPD data, BD stand alone players have 16% market share, HD DVD enjoys a 33% market share, while SD DVD holds 51%.

9. All studios are going to expand the connectivity features, like on the Star Trek HD DVD you can connect to CBS's server and get a tour of the Star Ship Enterprise.

10. All Toshiba products are Earth friendly and will carry the "Earth Protection" logo on their packaging. There is a long list of things Toshiba has developed to ensure their Earth friendly compliance.
GREAT news for HD-DVD!

Shame they're all generic companies, except Onkyo.

Onkyo rocks my socks off.

Integra is most certainly NOT a generic company.

There's no way that that's right.

Yeah, there's debate about that going on hot and heavy. I'm thinking they mean the end of 2008.

They are talking all HD-DVD players. Standalones, PC drives, laptops, xbox, etc etc etc.

Even still I think the number is high.

Mind you, Toshiba sells about 10 million laptops a year, so if they're putting HD-DVD players in each one, that's a big chunk. Acer/HP/Asus also put them in their laptops, so that could account for a large chunk as well

Big thumbs up for finally seeing some high-end HD DVD players coming into market... was already waiting for the Onkyo reviews, now I'll keep an eye out for Integra's. It's a damn shame though that you have to buy a Toshiba to get the Star Trek phaser remote.

maybe the Paramount/Dreamworks move to HD-DVD will propell more companies to produce HD-DVD players - I'm looing at you Pioneer.

Hey, it sounds like they're generic. AFAIK, Integra is basically Onkyo, right? In the same way Lexus is Toyota.

Yep. Integra is the very high end Onkyo brand.

Word... but Blu got another Pioneer player instead. Link
You don't really need it there with the PS3 around, but it sure would be sweet to have one for HD DVD.

Why do you think that the XA2 and XA3 are not "high end players". They are.

A new JVC Blu player was revealed today as well. I believe that is the first for the company.

They may be high end for Toshiba... but they are still Toshiba.
I understand how the "early adopter" game goes, you get what you can... but it felt great moving my Samsung BD player to my secondary system, & I can't wait to do the same thing with my HD DVd side. I'll give Toshiba props for getting it started, but a change is long overdue for me. I'm not even really that much of a snob when it comes to electronics, but there are some manufacturers that I just do not want to own. All JMO.

8. According to NPD data, BD stand alone players have 16% market share, HD DVD enjoys a 33% market share, while SD DVD holds 51%.

Does this not contradict Sony's claim today that BD standalones are outselling HD-DVD players? I'm confused.

"Currently" outselling. As in, for the past however many weeks. Meanwhile, yes, the total number of standalone players sold is still higher for HD DVD.

Good thing then that Onkyo has an HD DVD player coming. Are you really that hung up about the Star Trek remote?

Not enough to buy another Toshiba, would've more than enough to buy the Season 1 box set if I could program it on that Onkyo (AND the Onkyo reviews don't suck re: bang for the buck, doesn't have to be great in comparison but there's got to be some improvement). Then again, I haven't seen any pictures of this remote yet... I'm definitely an impulse buyer lol.

This is what the official remote looks like (identical to the one in the first photo above, to my eyes):

Looks fairly cheesy to me. But then I'm not a Trekkie.

Pretty gimmicky. I can't imagine it's very functional, either. Personally, I'd rather just buy a toy phaser replica.

Any idea when some of the gen 3 models with
"in pack" movies are gonna start arriving?

All this news looks as if HD DVD is gonna really throw out all the stops in this war.
Having 300 alone packed in looks like it will sell alot of players. Sony could put Spider-Man 3 in pack, but I doubt it very much. From what I understand sony can't afford to fight this war, but they can't afford to loose it either.
