Dish Network now allows an external Hard drive for HD

http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/o...hd/index.shtml

DISH Network customers with ViP622TM or ViP722TM HD DVR receivers can now enjoy near limitless DVR storage with the addition of an external hard disk drive. Available at most electronics retailers, these devices connect to the set top box receiver via a USB 2.0 cable and allow customers to transfer recorded content off their DVR and on to the
external hard disk drive. From there, the program can be kept, watched or even sent back to the DVR.

While most major manufacturer external
hard drives are compatible with the ViP622
& ViP722, a minimum 40GB and maximum
750GB drive is recommended.

• There is a one-time $39.99 activation fee
required that will enable this feature on
all ViP622 and ViP722
receivers on a customer’s account.

• For more information download the External
DVR Storage Feature Brochure here
GADZOOKS!!! Any old hard drive. You just need pay a one time fee. Makes me wonder if these can then be burned. But based on the price of HD media, it might be cheaper for me to just keep external HDs handy.

This is fantastic for those of us who want to record a whole season and wait to watch them. 30 hours of content just doesn't cut it.

edit: Here's a download brochure. You can use multiple external drives, you just have to connect them one at a time. http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/o...HDDStorage.pdf

This is great news, maybe it will force Comcast to do the same. Their HD boxes have had firewire ports for years.

This has been a fantastic addition to my Dish HD DVR. I've had a 500 GB external drive connected since the day it was activated and it has been working fine. I already have a ton of HD programming on it. I don't know of any way to burn the encrypted recordings but it's no big deal to me. If I fill up the drive I'm using I'll just start using another. You could create an amazing library this way for as long as you remain a Dish customer.

I had never heard of this before. Are you on fairly new? It wasn't an option when I got my DVR, but was one of those, "some day in the future" things, which I figured would never happen. I am about to order 2 500 gb drives for this. Really pissed I didn't keep the Boise State/Oklahoma game on my dvr, but I needed the space.
