the $40 tag most likely gonna sell at $30... With a little patience, you can get the movies under $20.
|
Any $40 list discs (Fox, Paramount, Uni) usually result in a 27.95 price at Amazon.
For people like me that have Prime and got in on the 10% discount, these titles will cost ~$25 shipped. I can live with that, even on bare bones catalog titles I love (Cast Away, ID4, etc.) Hell, I've paid $30-$40 for HD DVD and Blu-Ray imports for stuff like The Rock, Crimson Tide, Starship Troopers, Enemy At The Gates and Perfume. |
It hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but this is really just the same old crap Fox pulled in the early days of DVD. When DVDs had a retail of $25 & $30 Fox entered the game with recycled non-anamorphic transfers for a premium of $35.
None of us with long memories were surprised by Fox's bare-boned, MPEG2 $40 blu-rays. I did wonder now they're getting around to finally releasing a second wave, if they might have seen some light about pricing, espcially for catalog titles. I should have known better! Fox did turn into a great DVD company. But in the beginning, they were appalling. Looks like history might be repeating itself here. |
These prices are terrible! $28 for a catalog title that most people already own on DVD.
WB offers coupons that reduce their catalog titles to $16 each on average. |

Better hold on to your SDs then, we'll let you know how they look. ;)
... if they really do come out this time. ;) |
Given their track record for multiple releases of the same title, Fox is really missing a bet by staying exclusive to Blu-ray. Just think: if they were to release the same featureless catalogue titles on both formats now, affixing their high-binder $40 MSRP to each, then in another 6 months to a year, they can start coming out with "special limited ultimate extreme" editions in steelbook cases with linticular covers and re-sell the same titles on both formats yet again. They could totally be taking advantage of both sides instead of just sticking it to one! Well, two, I suppose, when you remember that's what they've been doing for years on DVD . . .
|
Well, here are some prices I saw today on dvdpricesearch.com (DVDEmpire.com prices only listed w/shipping):
28 Days Later (Blu-Ray) $32.71 (FOX) Amityville Horror, The (1979) (Blu-Ray) $30.04 (MGM) Close Encounters Of The Third Kind: 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition (Blu-Ray) (Sony) Day After Tomorrow, The (Blu-Ray) $32.71 (FOX) Edward Scissorhands (Blu-Ray) $32.71 (FOX) Hills Have Eyes 2, The: Unrated (Blu-Ray) $32.71 (FOX) Home Of The Brave (Blu-Ray) $30.04 (MGM) Mr. Brooks (Blu-Ray) $30.04 (MGM) Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World (Blu-Ray) $32.71 (FOX) Robocop (Blu-Ray) $30.04 (MGM) |
At 25 bucks a pop, the only ones worth the money are The Fly (if it's the CE), Robocop (if it's unrated), Edward Scissorhands, Die Hard, Die Hard with a Vengeance, and Independence Day (barely).
|
Fox pricing is definately not making things any easier.

From what I hear, we are losing most of the extras on The Fly. *sigh*
|
Unfortunately I've heard that about the Fly also. So $40 MSRP for a bare bones (or close to it) catalog release. Awesome. Talk to me when they come inline with every other studio on either format.

Why is it so hard for Fox to include extras? The stakes have been raised and you would think they would take a hint.

They are the ONLY studio that prices all catalog titles at $39.99 and leaves off most extras. Why be different, in a bad way? Why?
|
Fox still has not figured out that high MSRP = Low sales?
Ugh. This is why I am passing on every single one of these. |
Fox is a HD-DVD double agent, purposely putting out blu-ray with no extras and higher prices to make blu-ray fail.
You guys crack me up. At least Fox is maybe going to put out the movies on blu-ray. Still seems like lip service at the moment though. |
As Fox owns MGM will the MGM releases be region locked or all region??

As for your region coding question, I can't say. |
Too bad their MSRPs suck but I'm still going to get all their day and date releases.

Fox does not own MGM, they only distribute MGM's catalog releases for Sony. The press release sounds like they are including, at least, some extras on these discs. So there is hope. Also, I don't think Fox has officially announced an MSRP for the catalog titles, so maybe DVD Empire was just jumping the gun on the pricing. Maybe...:) |
Looks like the new releases will at least be feature packed, here's specs on 28 Wks Later from the Bits:
"And on the Blu-ray front, Fox has set 28 Weeks Later for release on 10/9. The 50GB disc will feature AVC compression and DTS HD Lossless audio. Extras will include audio commentary by director/co-writer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and co-writer Rowan Joffe, 2 deleted scenes with optional commentary, the Code Red: The Making of 28 Weeks Later documentary, 3 featurettes (Blood of the Infected, A Bloody Battlefield: Designing and Destroying District One and 28 Days Later: The Aftermath) and the film's teaser and theatrical trailers." |
Now, if only we could get a player that can decode DTS-HD MA

I keep looking at those Moulin Rouge shots on the BR Best-Buy promo and am very upset that this was not one of the announced releases. Will pay up to 60$ for the disc when it arrives without a prob.

I think this press release is about Die Hard and the Fantastic Four, but it's a whole lot of "Hooray for Blu Ray!" too...
DIE HARD Trilogy Debuts Worldwide On Blu-ray Disc -- New Releases Feature Fox’s First Multi-Player Strategy Game And The Most Sophisticated BD-Java Games To Date On Any High Def Format -- IFA Berlin, Germany/Los Angeles, CA – August 30, 2007 – Cementing its intention to release at least one state-of-the-art title per month, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment (TCFHE) today announced worldwide Blu-ray new release plans for the $267 million global box-office family favorite FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER (OCT. 2 North America / OCT. 9 International) and the $348 million global box-office action powerhouse LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (NOV. 20 North America / OCT. 28 International) day-and-date with the BD release of the DIE HARD TRILOGY. The announcement further supports TCFHE’s aggressive global Blu-ray Disc release strategy that includes 29 new release and “must-have” catalog titles from Fox and MGM that runs through the end of the 2007 calendar year. The only high-definition packaged media universally supported by the film, music, gaming and computer industries, BD is the #1 selling high-definition packaged media. “On a worldwide basis, BD is averaging nearly 70% market-share per week of all high definition titles sold this year and, in the U.S., it is out-performing HD DVD by 2 to 1, in some territories the ratio is 3 to 1,” noted Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “Given the retail landscape this holiday season, we expect the sales gap between Blu-ray and HD DVD to grow significantly wider as the most anticipated films of the year debut exclusively on the Blu-ray format.” “In fact, once our Blu-ray consumers, and those still on the fence, experience the advanced BD-J interactivity games available on Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer and Live Free Or Die Hard they’ll realize what we’ve been telling them all along – Blu-ray is really the only way,” continued Dunn. FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER The BD release of the fun and fantastically entertaining sequel to the Blockbuster hit, FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER includes hours of bonus content including deleted scenes, a full length “Making Of” documentary, multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes and commentaries with two exclusive high definition BD-Java bonus features: “Who Dares Defy Galactus?,” Fox’s first multi-player strategy game and a “Saving The World One Question At A Time” trivia game. “I’m thrilled that both of my Fantastic Four films are available on Blu-ray,” noted Director Tim Story. “You can really see spectacular detail in the CGI visual effects we used to create the Silver Surfer character. Plus, fans of the Fantastic Four will have the added bonus of continuing the battle between Galactus and the Silver Surfer through the really cool interactive games that are only available on the Blu-ray release." “Who Dares Defy Galactus?” challenges players to an intergalactic battle through a galaxy comprised of 30 planets, 10 of which are colonized and have varying levels of life force. Players compete against each other as either Galactus, who must find the live planets and consumer their energy, or The Silver Surfer, who must find the live planets and defend them against Galactus. If Galactus is victorious, additional solar systems are unlocked and the battle for live planets rages on. If The Silver Surfer defeats Galactus, the power cosmic never dies and will be waiting to consume more planets when players begin the game again. Fans of “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine” will be put to the test to compete for Fantastic Four knowledge supremacy in the “Saving The World One Question At A Time” interactive, pop-up trivia game. Contestants must correctly answer a series of trivia questions related to the Fantastic Four film and Marvel comic book franchise in order to defend Earth from Galactus’ ravenous appetite. A chain of illuminated planets are aligned on the bottom of the television screen. If players fail to answer trivia questions correctly to deter Galactus, one-by-one the planets will fall dark until the World as we know it is destroyed. LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (DIE HARD 4.0 Internationally) The fourth installment of the established world-renowned Die Hard franchise, explodes onto BD day-and-date with the DIE HARD TRILOGY and features an arsenal of bonus content including a “Die Hard” music video by Guyz Nite, a “Making Of” documentary, actor and director commentaries and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”. “Black Hat Intercept!” begins with a warning from ‘The Warlock’ (cult-classic writer, producer and director Kevin Smith) that a computer virus has been placed inside an unwitting Internet companies’ mainframe by the infamous cyber-terrorist, Thomas Gabriel. As the team leader from inside the surveillance van, players must guide an agent into the building, outwit the building’s security systems and personnel without being detected and then wipe the hard drive clean before the virus destroys the U.S. Additionally, the BD debut of the DIE HARD TRILOGY comes locked and loaded with numerous bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, actor and director commentaries, visual effect breakdowns, alternate endings, side-by-side comparisons and much, much more. All of the BD titles announced today will be authored in BD-J with AVC (MPEG 4) compression and presented on 50 GB dual-layer discs with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio plus English, French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound. In addition to the highest quality audiovisual elements, each BD release will also feature D-Box compatible motion sensor cues to give D-Box chair equipped viewers a more life-like and intense viewing experience. Complete title configurations and market release dates will be announced by individual territories. I notice they left out the pricing.
what's with all the interactive games on these two? I thought the majority of Blu-ray users were only interested in the movie? |

Rare exceptions will be made but, Netflix will be making money off me instead of the movie studios.
