Wow...I am stunned that this actually happened... I'm not going to lie, I've been leaning blu ever since I got my PS3, because I figured with Universal being the only major HD DVD supporter, I might as well brace for the future...but now who knows, this is truly a game changer IMO. And I'm also wondering what's going to happen with my Blades of Glory BD pre-order (of course I'll just switch it to HD DVD instead, but still, BD was going to have lossless).
This is a surprise and now I may have to go out and buy an actual HD DVD player instead of just the add-on, because the sound I get out of it isn't nearly as good as the audio from the PS3 and I want Transformers to blow the roof off my motherfrickin' house.

With this move, both HD formats are doomed to go down in flames like DVD-Audio and SACD. You thought there was consumer confusion before?
Financially, excluding the "rumored" $100 - $150 million payoff, this makes no logical business sense. Why would you throw out the protential to sell an additonal 150 to 200 thousand copies of a monster hit like Transformers? (It's not like this title is going to sell more than 100,000 units on HD DVD as an exclusive...)

I don't have either format yet, as I was waiting for a winner. I was starting to think of buying a BR player in the winter, but now paramount's made my decsision: I'm sticking with DVD.
It really is sad for HDM. It was so close to unifying, and now Paramount has sold out it's future for a quick payoff.

Have they not been looking at the sales numbers for major dual format releases? The sales ratio is 2:1 in favor of Blu-ray, not to mention every one of their own titles sells more units on Blu-ray...
I have both formats, and since May I have not bought a single HD DVD since The Matrix, becasue I thought it was time to vote with my pocket book.
I am just dumbfounded by this...
I guess the good thing is that Paramount has not been releasing much on either format, have they even released 40 titles yet? It's not like they're suddenly going to flood the market with product, that has never been their style with new formats.

Bottom line is this is a major blow for the Blu camp which I don't think they will be able to handle properly.

the blu-ray fanboys are about to implode at the blu-ray forums!
Nice to see MS and Toshiba using some of Sony's tactics against them.
I bet it's only a matter of time before the HD Association starts announcing they won the war!

Why? Well, I, like many others own both formats. When 300 came out it was $5 more and was tough to find. Many just settled on Blu-Ray. Now that Transformers is HD DVD exclusive, there is no settling. Its HD DVD or just DVD. Now if you want the HD DVD and don't have an HD DVD player...well...you need to buy one.

And to think I just bought a Blu-Ray player (PS3) just because the thought of seeing Transformers in 1080p would be awesome... UGH
Now I have to get an Hd Add-on for my 360 which only outputs 1080i... possibly 1080p through VGA... We'll see :-(

Blu-ray proponents say this announcement is the deathknell for HDM only because they can no longer envision Blu-ray dealing a knockout punch by Xmas. The concept that HD-DVD could conceivably pull this off in the long run, or that the two formats could co-exist side by side, is not a possibility to them. Which speaks to the arrogance bred into the format by Sony, hollywoodinhighdef.com, TDB, etc., etc.

Mr. Hunt just posted his thoughts, here's the first biased paragraph:
"Well... the high-definition format war just got more confusing for consumers, and you can thank the hubris of the folks at Microsoft for it. Their HD-DVD format badly needed a shot in the arm going into the holidays and just got it thanks to suitcases full of cash from the Microsoft camp."

Oh the irony! He goes on and on and on about MS paying people off...

I could care less whether Blu-ray or HD DVD wins the HDM format, I just wanted it one unifying HD format.
This announcement makes my decision to hold off getting a HD player this year easier.

Well, now that it's official I'm really shocked. I did not expect this, at all. Much better news would be if Disney started supporting HD DVD as well.
Remember the old charts I did?

HD DVD's old 14% share now goes to 24% at the expense of the "both" pie slice. So about 2/3rds of movies are available on Blu-Ray, a little under 50% available on HD DVD. (I'm not taking Fox off from that chart, but if you did, knock 10% off Blu-Ray).

Take your OBSOLETE Blu-Ray hardware back to the store and/or cancel unfilled orders ASAP! HD-DVD is here to stay!

"Is anyone else just disgusted by Microsoft's naked, shameless financial influence in this thing? Other than the small camp of HD-DVD fanboys who I'm sure soiled their undies this morning in joy?"
When an author starts insulting their readers, you know they've lost all perspective, since they're only thinking about their agenda at that point.
