I msy look at replacing my A1 with an A30 or A35. As Supermallet said, I'm not sure that will be able to use deep color. And my reciever only handles 5.1 over HDMI, so maybe I should go A30.

That is what I was thinking. I could have sworn when this support was mentioned for HDMI 1.3 they specifically said HD DVD and BD did not support it.

This will never happen. The HD DVD spec requires that discs authored in "Advanced" mode, which would be all of them, have audio decoded inside the player. Only discs authored in "Basic" can have the raw bitstream transmitted over HDMI 1.3, but there are no HD DVD discs like that.

On the other format, Blu-rays without interactive features are authored in Basic, but those with interactive features are authored in Advanced.

In any case, there's absolutely no difference between decoding inside the player and decoding in the receiver. The bits are arranged in a predetermined pattern, and it's not like one will decode more bits than another. Differences in audio quality come further down the chain, during the Digital-to-Analog conversion step, not during the decoding to PCM.

I'm just going by what was said in the press release:
Additionally, the HD-A35 offers High Bit Rate Audio via HDMI. With content encoded in 7.1ch, this advanced surround sound is achieved through the HDMI connection bypassing the player's internal audio processor and sending the signal to a 7.1 capable A/V receiver. High Bit Rate Audio will allow the consumer to integrate the HD-A35 with the latest multi-channel A/V receivers and enjoy a whole new dimension of high definition home entertainment.

The press release is misleading. That only applies to discs authored as "Basic", and there are no HD DVDs authored that way.

My A2 + SR605 combo has been flawless so far, but I've watched under a dozen HD-DVDs.

That would be an Onkyo. Not a Tosh. It may be a replacement for the X series to we consumers, but that doesn't help Tosh on the shelf at Best Buy.

I thought components in that player were made by Toshiba. This reminds me of the old Sabra Price is Right skit from SNL with Tom Hanks.

"So? Onkyo is good company! Inside is same as Toshiba! TOSHIBA GUTS! Is same thing!"
