Saw "Waltz with Bashir" at the Auckland International Film Festival.
This is pretty much a documentary on the Sabra and Shatila Massacre. It's a pretty intense experience, often brooding. The animation, although fantastic, seems to be in the way towards immersion to the topic, although, that might be just an intended effect. I came out with it knowing more about the massacre, and is definitely not the kind of film I would label as entertainment. If you go and see it, you'll get a lot from it. Although as a purchase, I definitely wouldn't classify this as a transient experience. |

For the Japanese & Korean version, it may not be edited but I have a funny feeling it will be censored (via macroblocking the pubic areas). |

Has anyone seen any reviews for Assembly Blu-ray from Hong Kong? I have seen some excellent reviews for the disc from the UK, but not the Hong Kong release, despite my Google efforts. I have noticed that the Hong Kong release is about $10 cheaper, so I would lean towards that option if I knew that the release was a quality one. On that topic, if anyone has viewed a Blu-ray disc from Hong Kong, could you share a mini review of the quality of the presentation? There are a few other titles that look interesting to me, such as Exiled Thanks! |

Eureka Entertainment have announced the UK Blu-ray Disc release of Johnnie To & Wai Ka Fai’s Mad Detective as part of their Masters of Cinema Series on 20th October 2008 priced at £19.99. Last year’s largest grossing film at the Hong Kong box office turns the traditional Hong Kong police film on its head: the twist being our hero – Detective Bun (Lau Ching Wan) – has the ability to ‘see’ people’s inner personalities or “hidden ghosts”. Detective Bun (Lau Ching Wan) was recognised as a talented criminal profiler until he sliced off his right ear to offer as a gift at his chief’s farewell party. Branded as ‘mad’ and discharged from the force, he has lived in seclusion with his beloved wife May (Kelly Lin) ever sine. I thought Mad Detective was absolutely awful, but it should be a nice disc for fans of the film. Odd that those three additional web features aren't being included on the disc...

I have Exiled, Mad Detective, Kung Fu Dunk, IA 1-3, The Warlords, Seven Swords, An Empress and the Warriors, and a few others but haven't seen many of them yet. I can tell you to stay away from Behind the Yellow Line though. Awful transfer both video and audio wise. |
