Regarding Rikidozan, I think it is not an animation. I can't tell for sure from the web-pages I've found, but I believe it is this film:

The Best Foreign Language Film category requires nominees to be officially submitted by the country of origin, limiting the nominees to one possibility per country. The Best Picture category does not have any such limits.

So, therefore, even though the Academy may have considered Letters from Iwo Jima one of the best pictures of the year, that doesn't mean that the country of origin (in this case the U.S) necessarily also submitted it for the Foreign Language category.

In any case, it's a moot point in light of the other rule that the Foreign Language submission can't be a U.S. production.

The current disc is not bad at all, I actually watched it a few days ago on my BR, but I do believe there is plenty to be improved (the animation sequences for example don't seem that convincing to me). I think the big advantages with the upcoming BR release will be:

sound- this film has a very strong soundtrack (the German R2 DVD carried a DTS the R1 did not)

color- you want to talk about strong use of color, this film has it all. I think there is a very good reason why Sony is going after it.

Also, I maybe too picky but there is plenty of edge-enhancement on the R1 for my taste.

To your second question, I am listing all releases, regardless of region.

This being said, I am still hoping that Miramax surprise us with the Colors Trilogy sooner rather than later.

They played Lola Rennt on HDnet in January, and while it was nicer than the DVD, it wasn't night and day or anything like that.

I'm hoping a BD release would be even better, and lossless should kick as with the soundtrack the film has.

Just ordered mine. Under $30 shipped to California.

yes & no. BD does have region coding, but many of the discs that have been released internationally aren't actually locked. If there's one you want, you can probably find a review somewhere that will tell you if its locked or not...
