Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I swear I searched, though maybe not hard enough.
What ever happened to Silence of the Lambs on Blu-Ray? I thought it had a street date in April but can not find it. I am assuming it was pushed back? |
It was one of the many Fox/MGM titles that got magically delayed.
|
Fox title... MIA with the rest of them.
|
Hannibal ate it...with some fava beans and a nice chianti. :)
|
I was able to record this off of Starz HD the other day. For compressed DirecTV quality, the image looked impressive. Certainly the best I've seen it, which gives me high hopes of the upcoming Blu-ray release. Sadly, I have this horrible feeling that since it was one of the older MGM delayed titles, it'll be a shitty bare-bones release.
If that's the case, then I think there will be some harsh words for MGM by many members. One of the greatest films of all-time should receive the absolute best BD treatment possible. |
Well, Amityville was MPEG4 (previously announced by Fox in early 07) while Carrie was MPEG2 (which was announced in 08). Keep your hopes high...maybe we'll get lucky.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Per blu-ray.com:
March 3, 2009 release date. It actually has all the extras from the 2-disc dvd. Plus the usual AVC encode and DTS HD Master Audio. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=2302 |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
 I wonder if the previously annonced Hannibal will show up as well.

Funny, I caught the end of this movie last night on TV, and then just now, the Blu-ray announcement popped into my in box. Yep, MGM has slated The Silence of the Lambs for Blu-ray release on March 3 (prebook Feb. 4) priced at $34.99. Just imagine, that bloody, skin-stripped man hanging on the side of Lector's cage in crystal clear high-definition. Yummy! To quote the press release, the Blu-ray version of Lambs will include a "buffet of thrilling extras." Nice! Among them, behind-the-scenes featurettes Breaking the Silence and Understanding Madness, the two-part documentary The Silence of the Lambs: From Page to Screen and a featurette about the film's score. The original 1991 making-of featurette, Inside the Labyrinth, Making The Silence of the Lambs, also will be included, as well as more than 20 deleted scenes, outtakes, TV spots and a phone message from Lector himself, Sir Anthony Hopkins. Fox distributes MGM product. |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I wished there was a way for them to include the extras from the Criterion. I'll still pick it up (as long as it has a decent transfer) but I guess I'm destined to own two copies of this movie.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Can anyone indicate what extras does the Criterion dvd have that this upcoming BD won't? And is the Criterion dvd anamorphic?
Thanks!!! |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Criterion's non-anamorphic disc:
* Commentary by Jonathan Demme, stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally, and FBI agent John Douglas * Seven deleted scenes * Film-to-storyboard comparison * Storyboards * FBI crime classification manual * Voices of Death: word-for-word statements of convicted serial killers * Breaking The Silence Feature * Understanding the Madness Feature * Inside The Labyrinth: Making The Silence Of The Lambs documentary * The Silence Of The Lambs: Page To Screen two-part documentary o A Wealth Of Talent o Preparation And Authenticity * Scoring The Silence featurette * Original 1991 “Making of” featurette * Deleted Scenes o Clarice Meets Lecter o Clarice on the Firing Range o Ardelia find a Newspaper Article o Clarice at a Storage Unit (Excerpts) o John Douglas at Quantico o Second Meeting (Excerpts) o Clarice Gets Her Gun o Crawford and Clarice (Excerpts) o Clarice Reviews Phony Deal o Third Meeting (Excerpts) o Buffalo Bill Sews (Excerpts) o Clifton Taunts Lecter (Excerpts) o Kack Crawford at Johns Hopkins o Krendler Discovers Phony Deal o Clarice Meets Barney o Lecter's Escape o Clarice Gets Suspended o Clarice's Decision o Inside Buffalo Bill's Lair o Mr. Bimmel and the Birds o Buffalo Bill and Clarice (Excerpts) o Lecter's Phone Call * Outtakes Reel * Anthony Hopkins Phone Message (audio only) * TV Spots o Mind Against Mind o Clue For Clue o Only Hope o Hangs In The Balance o Teacher o FBI o Rookie o Bookwing Flap Teaser * Theatrical Trailer * Teaser Trailer |

Agreed. That OOP Criterion is too good to let go. I hate to admit it, but it is true.
as a movie collector, i've learned to accept the fact that some movies are never going to have a single, definitive version, so i just have to keep some of my previous editions and make my own definitive set. |

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Yep, I have all three DVD versions and still prefer the coloring/brightness on the Criterion transfer even though it's non anamorphic (though the latest CE is an acceptable compromise). Not to mention the bass missing on the latter two versions when Clarice enters the cell area for the first time to meet Lecter. Of course I will be picking up the BD anyway.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
good to know i have learned how to spell Blu-ray since 6/07
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I happened upon two copies of the Criterion edition a very long time ago. I guess these will be permanent in my collection. I really dug the commentary with Demme, Hopkins, and Foster.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I hope "Red Dragon" is not too far behind.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I managed to get a copy of the criterion disc, so I switched out the extras-empty disc1 with the criterion disc1 and the features-full disc2. I'm happy as a pig in poop with that set, so hopefully I won't snap for a while and grab that BD.

Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Apologies for not following this board as closely as others-- I'm still new!-- but I could have sworn I read on this site that Silence of the Lambs would be arriving on Blu-Ray on 3/3/09, only I don't see it listed anywhere. Is it a Canadian thing? Was the date pushed back? Any insight?

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I am also getting concerned about this and The Princess Bride...also not on Amazon.
Looks like Kingpin isn't coming out for sure, though. Really pissed about that. |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?

Looks like Kingpin isn't coming out for sure, though. Really pissed about that. Interesting that Kingpin was supposed to come out in Aug of last year, then this year. Here is the artifact of it: http://www.amazon.com/Kingpin-Blu-ray/dp/B00193F2ZU/ |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Amazon is not the only place to buy these nor are they the definitive word on releases.
Ronin is coming on the 24th. Some folks have already found copies in stores. Silence of the Lambs and Princess Bride both have had new press releases from Fox and MGM that list the date and bonus features. |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I don't think Kingpin was ever officially announced.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Well, it should be coming out, because mine shipped yesterday. Hope that helps.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Thanks for the heads up.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I asked Jeff Kleist on blu-ray.com the other day if this was still coming out and he said it's still listed for 3/3 in Fox's database.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
board member reviews at AVS is indicating we are getting yet another craptacular release of a classic from the studios
My copy arrived today....First thing i checked was the back cover which states it's an MPEG2 encode release. ( yuck ) Interesting....I feel they have DNRed away grain and fine detail...It still looks ok and many will find it acceptable but i feel it's lost the finer detail which should be present in HD films on Blu Ray. Check out the trailer which is in AVC HD....More fine detail ( more grain than was probably present in the actual film print ) - I feel the trailer actually blows away the film on the disc in regards to fine detail and just looking like proper film even though it most likely has stronger grain than was present in the actual film print release. Now it could be the trailer has also had slight sharpening applied but there is no denying the grain removal on the main feature. This release reminds me of the movie The Descent....The MPEG2 edition has been degrained although still looks ok just nowhere near as good as the AVC encoded grain edition. ( Xylon can make a comparison thread from this one ) Disappointing to say the least and i think i'm going to be selling my copy....It just looks too smooth but i'm figuring they thought most people would be turned off by the grain. It's amazing that classic fabulous films like this get such bad treatment and i am really disappointed. OK, I lucked out and found this on the shelf at a video store for rental. After skipping through the blu-ray comparing it with the last dvd release this afternoon, I think FoxyMulder actually understated how poor the new blu-ray transfer is, especially when compared to the (last MGM) dvd release. The color saturation is significantly toned down and leans more towards cool blues on the blu-ray compared to the warmer and much more natural colors of the dvd. Fleshtones take on a cool, almost pallid look on the blu-ray version. More importantly, significant fine detail has been lost compared to previous dvd releases (including the old non-anamorphic Criterion dvd), no doubt due to digital noise reduction/smoothing. I can't do screen caps but a good example is comparing the beginning of Chapters 3 and 5 (both the dvd and blu-ray are chapter marked at the same spots through the film) where you can directly compare a portrait framed shot of Dr. Chilton talking while holding a pen and an extreme closeup of Jack Crawford's face between the blu-ray and dvd. Yes, film grain is "washed" away along with the tiny details in the actor's faces. The color timing changes on the blu-ray work to some extent in shots such as the Lecter prison scenes where the feeling of the cold, damp surroundings in Lecter's cell is better conveyed, but for much of the rest of the movie, especially well lit or daylight scenes, everything simply looks unnaturally desaturated. Of course, the added resolution of blu-ray over dvd on larger screens will bring out the drawback of the dvds smaller resolution, but imo, I preferred the dvd over the blu-ray by a wide margin on a 1080p 50" screen using a crappy old Toshiba 6200 dvd player (vs the Panny BD30). A very disappointing no buy for me. T.B. |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
^ if true that sucks, but it's AVS.. so we'll see.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
It wouldn't surprise me. I don't think I've ever seen an impressive version of SotL.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Ugh, I sold off my SE copy (not the newest version of course), but I still have the Criterion. I was really looking forward to this release, but now I'll probably wait until I can get it for around $10-$15.
|
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
MPEG2. I knew it. WTF MGM? You had this title planned and sitting for almost 3 years and couldn't be bothered to go back and do it right? This is not 2006 its 2009!
Any words on Extras? I have yet to receive my review copy...but now I'm not looking forward to it :( |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
The funniest thing is, I just got Ronin, and inside there's an insert which proclaims:
MGM takes HD seriously! Yeah, sure.... |
Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I saw it recently on StarzHD and thought it looked pretty good. I'm going to wait and read reviews from places other than AVS. I don't trust anything posted there regarding BD.
