This has to be a new record... (HD/BD software sales)

Alright. I've stopped meticulously following individual sales on Amazon for a while (just too much work, no outside interest, and I could never figure out how to pull code automatically) but I still check into www.thedvdwars.com every once in a while.

I've always thought that comparing sales of The Matrix vs. Batman vs. Casino Royale vs. Pirates was a bad idea because the titles are exclusive to only one format. But since the release of The Departed, there's hasn't been a big cross-format seller...

until Planet Earth. This box set has consistently been in the Top 20 for both HD DVD BD for as long as I've checked. Day in, day out. Last year, it was a surprise if any title cracked the top 1000 (out of all DVDs). It's also nice to see HD DVD holding its own, as the HD DVD is outselling the BD (by a slim margin, natch).

I don't want this to be a vs. thread but it's nice to see the occasional title rise above the "doomed niche" prognosticating that we hear so much from outside (non HD Talk) sources.

it was posted on AVS, but I think people here would find it interesting, too.

go to www.thedvdwars.com and look at the "Salesrank of top 10 products" chart, and click the "Last 30 Days" radio button.

Notice the steady increase for HD DVD over the past month.

Things are getting very interesting...

Yeah, The Matrix and the price drops have HD DVD pulling even, I think the surge could be so dramatic they regain a narrow lead by the end of the month. I had been considering upgrading both my players A1 and PS3, but right now, the war is going so strong I plan to wait for Christmas. I think $200 or lower is realistic especially for HD DVD and maybe $300-$400 for BD. I think we will start getting some price drops on media catolog stuff around Chrsitmas as well since this Christmas should define the broad (that is get the fence riders and the JSP of the HD world) HD market.

Amazon is basically the only resource. Tictap.com (which is what I used to catalog www.HDCharts.com) lets you go back up to 30 days for any one title, assuming that someone searched for that title on TicTap.com. They don't keep info on every title.

I'm guessing I might be able to pull this using Amazon Web Services, which I signed up for but never used. The one thing I've not seen anyone compare is sales between all three formats: DVD, HD DVD, and BD on the same title, which is the second chart on www.hdcharts.com
