Pan's Labyrinth coming out in HD??

I don't want to buy the dvd if it's coming out in a few months. I thought it was supposed to be coming out on HD-DVD or something?

bboisvert 05-14-07 09:02 PM

New Line film... they've yet to release anything on either format, although they've claimed that they plan to release on both.

chase3001 05-14-07 09:33 PM

I hate the fact that they want people who support HD to double dip. If they don't day and date the release, or at least indicate a HD release is down the pipeline, they are just trying to take more money from us. Even though I really want to see this movie, I am going to wait until an HD release.

Artman 05-14-07 10:02 PM

My guess is NL starts releasing next yr, so if you want to get the DVD now you'll probably have at least a yr until HD. I loved the film but I'm waiting.

Supermallet 05-15-07 01:05 AM

I'm waiting for HD releases on new movies now. You know it's going to come at some point.

fryinpan1 05-15-07 06:00 AM

I bought the 2 disc DVD from Columbia House. It is a blind buy, but why wait a year when I can watch the movie for $5? If I like it, I am sure I will rebuy the HD version when it comes out.

Mr. Cinema 05-15-07 06:26 AM

I thought it was mentioned during CES '07 that New Line would start releasing HD in 3Q. Maybe Fracture will be their first title?

mdc3000 05-15-07 09:30 AM

I'm waiting for HD as well...I love this movie, but I'm not buying any new release movies on sd at all...

freudian-slip 05-15-07 10:23 AM

I'm waiting for HD as well. No more new SD purchases for me.

I'm optimistic about 2007 New Line releases because I saw they had pictures up at Amazon for the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I don't know if this means anything or not, but I'm hopeful. There were no dates associated with it:

For doubters, here's the link to Amazon

bboisvert 05-15-07 10:28 AM

That's just a fan-made image uploaded by an Amazon customer. Doesn't mean anything, unfortunately. :(

pinata242 05-15-07 10:31 AM

Good because those covers are fugly. There's just some times the HD-DVD banner is completely inappropriate.

Ahh, bummer! I hadn't noticed that. Thanks.

Centurion 05-16-07 10:31 AM

I hope Pan's Labyrinth is scheduled for an HDDVD release...don't care when either, but I'm not buying the SD. I've stopped buying SD for myself.

Agreed! In fact, one day movies will be beamed directly into our brains and the studios will want us to buy that version too. Don't even waste your money on the HD release and wait for the next format after that. They're just trying to steal from you.

I bet New Line is waiting for a winner before they release anything. It's the only logical reason left at this point. But I won't be buying Pan's Labyrinth or any other New Line movies until the HD versions come out. There is no way they are getting double dip sales from me.

isn't New Line a branch of Warner Bros. now, or am I getting my studios mixed up?

New Line is technically a branch of Warner, but they have separate home video studios that make their own decisions.

Looks like this title will be available as an HD import:

'Le Labyrinthe de Pan' or 'Pan's Labyrinth' on HD DVD...

Wild Side Video has announced Le Labyrinthe de Pan (Pan's Labyrinth) on DVD in 3 editions due for release in France, this July 4. It is expected to be priced at 49,99 €.

The HD DVD release of the film will only be available as part of the 5-discs Ultimate Edition set. It will be the world's first THX-Certified high-definition release. The main feature will be presented in 1080p High Definition 16x9 1.85:1 and (supposedly) with DTS-HD audio (Spanish & French).

The 3 DVD discs in the set would contain the standard definition release of the film plus bonus materials found exclusively on the Spanish DVD release, North American DVD release and the French 2-disc DVD release. The last disc of the set will be the original film score/soundtrack CD.

No details as to whether the French subtitles will be forced or optional English subtitles will be provided. But the HD DVD release is good news anyway, as it may mean that other distributors of the film on home video in other regions may be encouraged to follow suit.

Well, technically the Terminator 2 Blu-ray is THX certified, but whatever... :)

The packaging looks pretty similar to the Korean DVD set. I hope this turns out to have optional English subtitles, but if it's a French exclusive I worry it might not.

Yes, but that's a French box set.

I've only bought two SD DVDs in the past year: Borat and Venture Bros. Season 2. Everything else I can wait until it hits HD.
