Real talk. No more standard release purchases for me. Its HD or nothing....unless its something like Star Wars that will prob never see the light of day in HD legally.

No mention of english subs. It however is being released on BD in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. I think it will likely have english subs on this release.

*(French release)*

as much as I loved Pan's Labyrinth, I don't know if I want to drop $74+ on just the HD-DVD portion of the set.

Centurion 05-22-07 10:46 AM

Woah! $74...and the only disc that's HD is the movie. -eek-
The movie was all I wanted and not the extras.

I'll wait.

CKMorpheus 05-28-07 02:05 PM

Any update on this? I really don't want to drop 74 bucks on a movie.

Damed 05-28-07 02:07 PM

I'm waiting for someone to get it and confirm the existence (or lack therof) of English subs on the HD-DVD.

Josh Z 05-28-07 03:13 PM

No English subs on the French HD DVD, sorry.

CKMorpheus 05-28-07 04:58 PM

So I guess the next question is, any chance of a US HD-DVD?

The movie's distributed by New Line in the US. They haven't released on either HD format yet, but they're expected to support both just like their parent company Warner. When that might be, most speculation puts it at the end of this year.

Damed 05-30-07 09:01 AM

Sounds like there will be a repressing/second edition with English subs.

Here is a review of the French import:

http://www.worldinhd.com/movabletype...yrinthe_d.html

at the bottom of the page:

***Summary for english audience***

It's a world First with a "film of cinema", as this HD DVD is presented in a wonderful THX certified master. The general standard is excellent, with a very beautiful presence on all stages. No compression is visible, no halos either… The textures are richer and more expressive on HD, but if the profit is real on the day scenes, concerning the night passages or very dark moments, the contribution is more undervalued… compared to the DVD version. In daylight, there are beautiful 3D effects and a splendid respect of the colorimetry wanted by the movie maker, hot and natural. At the end, it is very "cinema-like" and fluid, contribution of HD definition is a real upgrade. The spanish DTS-HD Master Audio track is completely in agreement with the movie. It offers a very beautiful presence of the front stage, with a well placed stereophony. The voices are perfect, understandable and well integrated in-depth. The rear effects are numerous and some passages show EX/ES function with wonder. The low tones are very full, rich and lines of sub-bass are perceptible at many moments. Dynamics is excellent. Qualitatively comparable with the wonderful edition HD DVD of CHILDREN OF MEN. Please note that no english subtitles are provided here !

It's on tonight on HBO-HD, the first of only 3 showings this month.

The price of the import on Amazon.fr has now dropped to $58.18 U.S., but it's listed as a Region 2 disc. Has anyone confirmed that it's really region coded or if it's playable on U.S. HD DVD players?

RichC2 09-04-07 02:55 PM

UK Version is set for a November Release on HD, nowhere near as elaborate as the French edition, but for those that just want the movie in HD goodness.

AFAIK, all HD-DVDs are region free.

HD DVDs are region free, however, the standard definition discs included in the French set are most likely not. Can anyone confirm?

Whoah! Thanks for the tip. My cable doesn't offer Cinemax in HD. I've specifically been waiting to watch this movie for the first time because I wanted to see it in HD, and here's my chance.

True_Story1011 09-04-07 09:47 PM

With this feature being as big of a hit here the states as it has, I'll waiting for the American version.

bunkaroo 09-05-07 11:18 AM

Recorded the HBO HD broadcast last night. An immediate improvment in PQ is noticeable over the DVD. The subtitles were a nice white instead of the ugly yellow my player generates too.

It's usually easier to read the yellow ones over the white ones.

True, but white is usually fine except in some instances:
