Blu-Ray add-on for the Xbox 360 by Xmas?

There's a thread over at TeamXbox that reportedly has an Associated Press article stating that a Blu-Ray add-on could be out by Christmas for the 360. But no one seems to be able to provide a link to the article.

I highly doubt it. I couldn't see MS folding that quickly on HD DVD (although if it's $199, I may spring for it to have the security of both formats!).

This sounds a little iffy to me. Releasing something like this could hurt sales for the PS3.

I say bring it.

With MS.... it's not about folding, it's all about $$$.

Will Sony even allow that? Or are they ok with self-sacrificing their own features on the PS3 for licensing?

I think it's pretty clear that winning that format war is most important to them right now. They alienated a huge percentage of the PS fans for it. They know how popular the 360 is in the US so I don't see why they wouldn't do it.

If that's the case, it seems like a great move for Microsoft - but the sooner, the better.

$800 for a 360 with HD and BR capabilities sounds pretty damn nice to me.

Yup. And since the HD-DVD player gives two USB ports on the back you could just daisy-chain them together (all in theory of course).

I actually do hope it's true, but until I read the actual article, I'm not holding my breath. Just thought it would be interesting to discuss it. I'm with pinata242, $800 for both HD and BR and the best gaming system (IMO, at the moment, anyway) would be great.

Cost needs to be considered too though. Last I heard the Blu-Ray drives for the PS3 cost Sony almost $300. If that's still the case I wouldn't expect to see this one at $199 like the HD-DVD drive.

Ars is reporting that Blu-Ray diodes are about to become more readily available. That should help the production costs of all BR players.

I don't see it as folding on HD... just another choice for consumers...

Don't buy it for a minute. That said, if it did happen, I would bet on a hefty price tag - none of that 199 stuff.

If someone's claiming a recent AP article says something and you can't find it by searching news.google.com , they're probably making it up.

I don't think a Blu-ray add-on is completely out of the realm of possibility, but I don't know what Microsoft's incentive would be unless they could make one markedly less expensive than any other player on the market, and I'm skeptical that they could pull it off by the end of the year. (I mean, they'd have to be working on it now, wouldn't they?)

Not gonna happen.

The format war is a drop in the bucket at this point and there would be no reason for it. 14 Million copies of Casino Royale sold on DVD and 59k Blu-Ray copies sold...sorry, not gonna happen for a LONG time if ever.

Can I start a thread about the possibility of aa HD DVD addon for the PS3?
Only makes sense if we are making wacky assumptions.

This sounds like something Bluboy Beatboy over at AVS would make up.

But we already know that Peter Moore has said it's possible a Blu-ray add-on could be made if the need arises, so I don't find it that far fetched. Christmas may be too early of a time frame though.

Yes, if HD DVD format failed and Blu-Ray reigned supreme. However, both are still here.

Still waiting to see if someone can figure out a way to make the 360 add on work with the PS3.

So we should close the thread since there is 0 links provided. Which means this thread is 10000000% pure speculation.

Sure. Further speculation can be continued in the all-purpose Blu-ray thread.
