"I have to say DVD definitely took a bigger foothold quicker"
Then you dont remember the early days of dvd then. Hell days early years even. But anyway don't be shocked. People don't care about high def dvd's in any format. They barely get dvd's let alone some new thing that looks to them to be basically the same thing with crazy pricing.

DVD was fast on the uptake, but actually seems to have been slower than the HD formats. DVD was introduced in March 1997, and in the first calendar year sold 315,000 players. In 1998 another 1 million players were sold.
(See here for details via TheDigitalBits.com)
From this article in March,(linked here) here are the numbers for HD DVD and Blu Ray:
"On the HD DVD side, estimates are for 1.2 million stand-alone players and 500,000 Xbox 360 add-on drives. And for Blu-ray, Mandato is counting only 1.2 million of the 5.5 million PS3 units projected to be sold during the year, plus 500,000 stand-alone players, because his analysis suggests that just 22 percent of PS3 households purchase movies regularly."
So in about the same time as DVD sold 315,000 players, HD DVD sold 1.2 million stand alones, and Blu Ray even with shorter time has sold around 500,000 stand alones. The numbers may be off somewhat, but it definitely points to a pretty fast uptake compared to DVD.
Now imagine what it would have been like if we didn't have the format war!
