Traded in all my DVDs for a PS3...

So I already have the HD DVD addon for 360...

But not being able to get Casino Royale pushed me over the edge. I decided it was a good time to make the transition to HD only.

So I rounded up all of my DVDs and brought them to Blockbuster... They have a minimum $5 trade-in value (all prices in Canadian dollars). A lot of these I had purchased for really cheap.

Anyway I went in with 2 big laundry baskets full of dvds (one of them was one of the tall laundry baskets).

I wouldn't want to be someone behind me. It took a full hour to scan them all. I ended up getting $750 so had to pay about $40 extra to get the PS3.

So now I have both formats woot!

I kept all my really important dvds that I don't see coming out soon like Star Wars, LOTR, Indiana Jones etc.

The Blockbuster I go to rents Blu Ray and HD DVD disks so I'm doing mostly renting right now as I don't want to invest too heavily into either format just yet. Of course I got Bond though.,

Anyways, the point of this story is sometimes you have to get creative in order to get your HD players. I also traded in a few games and got an 8 month advancement on my birthday present from my parents to get the HD DVD add on for 360.

Congrats. I can't get rid of my dvds because the wife and kids don't have the benefit of HD, but I could see doing that. I have pretty much decided on renting almost exclusively, except for the obvious ones.

I wouldn't have traded everything in. There are a lot of titles that won't be released in HD anytime soon (if ever), and there is much TV material that cannot be released in HD. Then again, I don't know what you had. If they were all mainstream movies you might be all right.

Congrats on adding the ps3. Just curious if you know how many you traded in total?

That's not a nationwide policy at blockbuster right? If so, I've got another $50 in my pocket.

I sold mine on eBay. 220 DVDs for $795 US. Pocketing the money until the prices come down.

I'm thinking of putting pretty much all my DVD's up on eBay since I rarely watch them anyway. I'll just keep the movies I know I will rewatch, and the TV shows that I really enjoy. I wonder how much I could actually get for them all.

That must have been a pain in the ass to box those up to ship. I've thought about unloading a good portion of mine, but the shipping stuff would be a hassle, especially if you're talking about 100+ titles.

I've thought a lot about selling all of my DVDs on eBay and buying something a little more useful (like a really nice road bike, or just keeping the cash and waiting for a format winner), but I changed my mind and just decided to keep them all. It would be a big pain in the ass to do, and just thought "I bought these all for a reason...because I enjoy them, and to watch them, so just keep them." It's not like I'm going to re-buy them all if they came out in HD or BR.

$800 for a PS3? Even in Canadian that seems like to much. Did I misread?

Yea, I kept all the animated Disney films but traded in the Pixar because they will probably look amazing on Blu-Ray.

I kept things that would be hard to find like the Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein collection.

I sold a lot of seasons too but my wife kept all of her seasons... She still has all of her Sex in the CIty, Dawsons Creek, Party of Five etc. etc. She also kept most of her favorites like The Notebook etc. She did part with stuff but I was the one who had to make the big sacrifices. Firm but fair.

Also kept all my Sopranos and Simpsons seasons and seasons that I haven't finished watching like 24, Smallville and Entourage. But in order to make the money I had to part with a lot of ones I really liked.

For a few of my box sets like Scarface and Spiderman I sold the inside dvd but kept the box and plan to fill it with the HD version

In total it was about 125 dvds I'd guess I sold. I had watched them all many times to the point where I wasn't rewatching them too much. The ones that I did want to rewatch I wanted to save to see in HD anyway.

The PS3 is $699 in Canada... 14% tax = $798. Blockbusters in Canada always take in used DVDs however they don't always have the $5 minimum rule in effect so now is a good time to do it if you're thinking about it.

So when you entitled the thread "Traded in all my DVDs for a PS3..." you really meant "I traded a portion of my DVDs in for store credit which I used toward the purchase of a PS3" ?

I would've liked to see the before and after pictures of the two laundry baskets of DVDs (and $40) followed by the PS3.

Congrats, though! I don't know if I'd be willing to make that kind of trade (even for an HD DVD player and a dozen titles), but I can certainly appreciate the excited sentiments.

Personally I'm not getting rid of any DVD until I have its HD or BD equivalent in my hands.

Too many discs go out of print these days, and who knows when we'll get a lot of this stuff in high-def.

Yeah, and there's a lot of stuff that doesn't need to be HD. My MST3k stuff is fine on dvd, for example.

Nice work! Enjoy the PS3. I just got mine yesterday, although I bought it from a private seller instead of in a store - saved just over $200 on it If trading your DVDs in gets you HD and you're satisfied, that's what matters. I have 1400 dvds and can't imagine just dumping them all. I'm going to upgrade the movies I love and rewatch all the time, but that's about 10% of my overall collection. Others I might watch once every few years, and for those, I'll just keep the SD version - however, I'm not BUYING anything on SD again (*TV shows excepted because a lot of shows won't ever hit HD).

Yea the decision was also easier because I'm also a hardcore gamer.

Man, my friend wanted money for an xbox so he offered it to me for $200 and an xbox game.

I would have bought it in a second but the wife was too sour when I tried to sell her on the idea.

Man, having a PS3 a 360 and a Wii would just be too amazing.

But still... PS3 and 360 is amazing..

^ I have a PS3, 360 AND a Wii.

But all I play is that stupid Paperboy arcade game I downloaded off Xbox Live. Seems like a waste of hardware to play a game like that.

I have a PS3 and Wii and most of my gaming time the past two weeks has been taken up playing Symphony of the Night and Tecmo Bowl. So yeah, I haven't exactly tapped into the power of either console to this point.

BLockbuster does trade DVDs, but it's heavily dependent on your city's laws regarding pawning of goods. In Arizona, it's particularly strict, so only some stores allow for trades, while others are instructed not to do it altogether. I like the $5 min buyback amount in Canada, wish we had something like that in the states. Also, we're only allowed to trade 20 DVDs a day.
