Format War: Where are you now?

So where do you stand now?

It's been a while since we've done one of these...so I'm curious where everyone stands now...

Here's the results from the last one. Didn't realize it was done so recently.

Oh well...maybe some things have changed. ;)

I'm turned off to the whole thing. I went from trying to get my hands on as many HD DVDs as possible to just getting mad at the studios (on both sides) for all this nonsense. Blu-Ray has some interesting movies out now but until movies are $15 and I can get a top-notch player for $400 or less, I'm sticking with what I already have.

(I've also completely stopped buying SD DVDs since I know most of them will become HD in the future. By my calculation, the home video division of studios has lost over $2000 from me since this "war" started).

jonw9 02-14-07 10:44 AM

I am still neither. I am leaning HD-DVD (360 add-on) but currently just purchasing an Oppo and waiting a bit longer.

How long did the VHS/Beta "war" last?

JackBurton 02-14-07 10:44 AM

I would have sat the whole thing out for a while, but I already had an Xbox 360 and some gift cards, the hd dvd add-on just made sense. Wish my side had some more studio support, but other than that, I am very happy with the product so far.

Fincher Fan 02-14-07 10:46 AM

I'm strongly for HD-DVD now but, so long as the studio allegiance remains where they are, there will certainly come a point where I will have to bite the bullet on BD.

Sony made their last Beta around 1988, so about 12 years or so.

Still BD only for me, though I will probably buy a cheap player if Universal has not gone neutral by this time next year.

matome 02-14-07 10:48 AM

Blu-Ray only and very happy with it. Samsung and Panasonic players here.

Supermallet 02-14-07 10:52 AM

Got an HD-A1 and a PS3 and think both of them are excellent players. I still prefer HD DVD when given the choice, but in the end, as long as we get movies with high quality sound and video with all extras ported over and hopefully some all-new ones to boot, they could be encoded on papyrus for all I care.

fryinpan1 02-14-07 10:53 AM

HD DVD only for now, but seriously considering buying a PS3 or waiting for the next generation stand alone Blu-ray player.

The PS3 just does not seem like a very good value for me right now because I would use to watch 20-30 Blu-ray movies exclusively (most of which I already own on DVD). It does not upconvert standard DVDs and I do not care about gaming.

Skoobooz 02-14-07 10:59 AM

HD-A1 and PS3. I like movies, I like movies in high-def, both were affordable and are quality machines, the end.

Doughboy 02-14-07 11:03 AM

HD-A1 and PS3 for me. I have 61 HD-DVDs and 19 Blu-rays so far. I'm done buying SD-DVDs at this point except for certain TV shows and older catalog titles that'll likely never see a HD release.

As for dual format releases, if they're a wash in terms of video and audio quality, I get the HD-DVD.

JayDerek 02-14-07 11:05 AM

Just an HD-A1 right now and am very happy with it.

I may get a Blu Ray player later summer/early fall if they release a ~$500/600 Gen 2 player or if that doesn't happen will cave and get a PS3

I just joined Netflix and am pretty much done w/ standard DVD purchasing, except for the occasional TV series.

applesandrice 02-14-07 11:17 AM

I am FIRMLY an HD-DVD only supporter. I will not buy Blu-Ray in any form -- including TotalHD -- and I will not purchase standard definition releases from Blu-Ray only studios (except second-hand). Even if by some unholy turn of events Blu-Ray wins the format war and effectively replaces DVD as well, I will not buy it; I'd rather find something else to do with my time and money.

Arpeggi 02-14-07 11:19 AM

HD DVD in late 2006 and firmly in support of it. Then a crapload of good upcoming BR titles made me buy a PS3 in January. I have about 25 HD DVDs to 12 BDs.

LivingINClip 02-14-07 12:05 PM

HD DVD right now, will be doin' BR eventually. No hurry though, there is enough HD DVD releases to keep me happy, plus SD TV shows I need to catch up on.

Enough HD-DVD releases? Not lately. Last year we were getting catalog titles like Goodfellas, Adventures of Robin Hood, and Casablanca from WB. These days they're giving us the likes of Beerfest and Scooby-Doo.

BravesMG 02-14-07 12:14 PM

HD-A1, HD 360, PS3. I lean towards HD-DVD because I've got the two sets, but I do love the PS3 as a BD player.

Oliver Clothesoff 02-14-07 12:20 PM

Still HD DVD. I'm leaning toward one of the more inexpensive Blu players, but that may wait until summer.

dvd182 02-14-07 12:23 PM

I've got both through the HD 360 and the PS3.

ianholm 02-14-07 12:24 PM

Just Blu-Ray. Samsung here and I'm very happy with it.

Dan 02-14-07 12:25 PM

Still HD DVD exclusive with my HD-A1. I would rather upgrade to a new HD DVD player before buying a BD player. I have a LONG list of titles that I still plan to buy, so no need for BD here.

Bandit03 02-14-07 12:29 PM

Neither so far, but im leaning towards buying a PS3 in the next month or so and will probably start my Blu-Ray collection.

candyrocket786 02-14-07 12:37 PM

HDA1 and my 360 HD drive.

Between the US releases and imports, I see no reason to go Blu yet.

In other news, it looks like the Beta Version AnyDVD HD will allow you to output HD-DVDs through a non-HDCP compliant display. This is great news for anyone who has their 360 Drive connected to a PC.

darkside 02-14-07 12:37 PM

Still HD DVD only. I see more of us going multiformat, but I am not ready to take that step yet. Temptation almost got me a few times, but I really want to give it more time before I side with Blu-ray. For one many of the movies I have wanted on Blu-ray are expensive and nearly bare bones. Definitely nothing I want to invest in right now.

For another I am still not happy with the tactics used by the Blu-ray group. I realize its just business, but HD DVD still seems like it is getting very unfair treatment. I like underdogs and will probably stay exclusive to it for awhile. Just want to see more titles released, but hopefully things will get rolling again in the Spring.

The Edit King 02-14-07 01:12 PM

I'm a HD DVD MAN!!! &

Sure, I'd like to buy an overpriced, non-upconverting PS3 (60 gig), but maybe it's just my lucky nature protecting me from actually finding one.

-HD DVD THEEK!
