I have neither so far. Just the good ol' fashioned standard dvd. But I'm curious as to why a lot of people have disdain for Blu-Ray. What kind of tactics are Sony and the other supporters doing to make people dislike it. I thought Blu-Ray was able to hold more information on their discs. While it doesn't necessarily equal better, I thought people would be high on the potential.

I'm a HD DVD MAN!!!

Sure, I'd like to buy an overpriced, non-upconverting PS3 (60 gig), but maybe it's just my lucky nature protecting me from actually finding one.

(HOW THE HELL DID THIS GET HERE???)

-HD DVD THEEK!

Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I remember reading somewhere that HD-DVD is cheaper to make, it's more durable, and the overall quality of the movie is better. Blu-Ray is more expensive, it's less durable, and the quality is not as good.

The only thing about Blu-Ray is that it is able to hold a lot more than HD-DVD. I believe it's nearly double the capacity. HD-DVD holds about 25GB max, while Blu-Ray hold up to 50GB or more.

Wow. You are really going to be SOL if Paramount exclusively publishes on Total HD along with WB in the second half of this year. Hope you enjoy your Universal and porn titles. And I thought Freak was the most stubborn HD DVD supporter... ;)

I won't correct you, because you may be right!

I heard the latter part, about holding more information, being correct. I just never heard the other stuff. But if it's true, then I can see why that HD-DVD is the preferred format.

Which one has more studios backing it again?

Actually, I think you are correct on only one of your points. The quality of movies is not better on either format. They are essentially the same. The WB releases have proved that. BD is the more durable of the two discs because it has an extra coating to protect it from scratches. HD DVD does not have any coating and is just as easily scratched as a regular DVD. From what I have read, HDDVD is the cheaper of the two to produce. Eventually, that should even up as production increases for BD and they become more efficient. Supposedly HD DVD will come out with a 51gb disc and BD with a 200 gb disc within the next year. There are alot of hurdles to overcome on both sides to make that happen, however.

Turbo4life 02-14-07 02:06 PM

Format neutral here, I get the best of both worlds....

Pistol Pete 02-14-07 02:06 PM

Neither. I just boughts an upconverting DVD player and have to rewatch my collection before I consider an HD upgrade. I'm waiting for the cheap Chinese hidef DVD players to hit the market, whatever the format.

Exclusive Studios:

Blu-Ray: Disney, Fox, Sony, Lion's Gate
HD-DVD: Universal, Weinstein

Support both formats: Paramount, Warner

And refer to Bcolon's post on those other points.

Ha ha ha -- who do you think I learned from?:)

Honestly, I'm perfectly content to just start reading more or something. I can even remember the days when I spent my free time doing stuff like drawing and painting. But with seven or eight hundred movies in my collection right now (to say nothing of the TV series collections, etc.), I'm not exactly hurting for entertainment!

Doesn't Blu-ray have some kind of anti-scratch coating that is supposed to strengthen durability?

Both formats have their clunkers as far as picture quality is concerned.

Ralph Jenkins 02-14-07 02:57 PM

I got spoiled by HD DVD, and didn't want to invest in any more SD DVDs, so now I own both.

My current total:
HD DVD: 36
Blu-Ray: 15

I will say that my HD DVD purchases have slowed way down because nothing much has been released lately. Here's what I currently have on order:

HD DVD: Mulholland Dr., Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Graduate (all French imports)
Blu-Ray: Babel, The Prestige

Also, my Blu-Ray total was helped a lot by BB's "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" sales.

Yep, TDK Durabis.

From what I hear, Blu-Ray discs will need all the extra protection they can get if they are used in a PS3.

I think the only problems with the PS3 have been when people are standing it up rather than in the normal position.

dvdsteve2000 02-14-07 03:46 PM

I have a 360 HD & a 60GB PS3. Which format do I prefer? Whichever one has a movie I want, which lately has been Blu-Ray. If HD-DVD had enough decent movies out I probably wouldn't have bought a PS3, but too many titles I wanted, and too many tasties on the horizon forced me to get a PS3.

tacos 02-14-07 03:50 PM

I have both formats. However, I will not be buying too many more HD-DVD's. I did get the departed for $22.99 yesterday. But unless its just a great Universal release that I can't stand to be without. I will only buy the Blu-Ray from now on. The reason is simple. In my eyes HD-DVD doesn't seem to be winning (at least things have really calmed down from them) and I really don't want a large collection of movies that I can't watch someday. Could turn out that both formats could be that way. Who knows. But, I have definately slowed down on my buying. Blu-Ray just needs to drop there fucking prices though. 30 bucks for a movie isn't going to make anyone jump into the format. I have 20 something HD titles and only about 6 Blu-Rays.

And where do you base this from? Because Mr. Cinema's did it? Well, from what I hear, the 360 add-on has lots of problems playing HD-DVD's.

Guys....PLEASE do not let this turn into a bickering thread.

If you have any questions, please start your own thread. There are more than enough of them about each of the formats.

Kocheese99 02-14-07 04:43 PM

Firm HD-DVD supporter right now. I'm thinking about BR but i just don't want to spend that kind of money right now. $500 for the ps3?? I have about $200 in Giftcards to Best Buy so unless there's some kind of deal on a standalone or the ps3 i won't even think about BR until may at the earliest.

I thought it had problems playing HD-DVDs authored as DVDs.

Drexl 02-14-07 04:45 PM

I have an HD-A1 and a PS3 (20GB) and I am enjoying both formats.

Anubis2005X 02-14-07 05:01 PM

I think blue is a nicer color than red, so I'm gonna go with Blu-Ray... ;)

Actually, I'm learning more towards Blu-Ray because it looks like has a lot more support from studios and hardware manufacturers. The thing is, Playstation 3 doesn't interest me whatsoever, but I am very interested in getting a 360 one of these days. Ugh...

I think he's referring to the issues some had playing the latest Weinstein discs.

ScottsDvds 02-14-07 05:33 PM

I have three HD-DVD players and plan to add a BD player soon, but since I'm at school I'm in no hurry.
