I think its time to invest in UNIVERSAL STUDIO shares - especially if people are prepared to pay for HD prices

Can anyone comment on the HD DVD of the Jerk, versus the 26th Anniversary SD edition? I haven't seen a review anywhere and really want to know if it's worth the upgrade. This was originally a nobrainer for me, but money's tight and no local stores have it...so I need to know if I should go to the trouble....

Here is a review:

http://www.digitalaudiovideo.com/hdd...iews_14581.htm

The HD-DVD is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. This is an old print, but it looks damn good. The only time I had ever seen it previously was on VHS, and this is light years ahead. There is still some grain, but its not overwhelming. Colors have been spruced up too. Audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, and its mostly a front heavy mix.

I can't wait to get "The Jerk". A lot of these older films look awesome in HD on a big screen.

how awesome ??

how about conducting a comparison between the HD and an upscaled SD ???

In any case - the review here on HD DVD REVIEW states the following :
But while this 1080p/VC-1 transfer looks great on paper, the truth is 'The Jerk' was never a visual tour de force, and even with limited expectations, it's hard to get that excited about "high def" that looks, well, pretty standard..... Detail is simply crappy. This HD DVD release, however, is pretty marginal

I've checked out the quality on my Pana Projector PTAE900E - 92in - running from my LG HDD DVD at only 576p - and the pic is OK for a '70s film (granted - I'm watching the movie - not watching for clarity). For $9 at DDD - thats enough money to spend on this type of film for me.

Most of the upscaled dvds I watch on my projector look pretty bad. I can only think of two or three HD discs off the top of my head that look comparable to the dvd ... Jay and Silent Bob, Traffic, Spartacus all come to mind.

On the flip side older HD discs like Grand Prix, Blazing Saddles, Robin Hood, The Searchers look freaking amazing.

can u provide some titles - and maybe some pics as to what you are describing as 'pretty bad' !!???!!!

what is your criteria of comparison - especially for a projector unit ??

using a Pana PTAE900E here - in what i would describe is 'totally un-ideal' - just projecting onto a lounge room wall - and the picture (at 92in) is OUTSTANDING for just plain SD titles.

I have an ISF'd Sanyo Z3 and a Da-lite High power 106 inch screen. I sit about 1.65 times screen width away. My bulb has around 125 hours on it.

This screen is really unforgiving regarding imperfections in whatever is thrown it's way. If it's a bad disc it'll show regardless of format. For what its worth Tonyjg I thought my dvds looked perfect when I use to watch them on my plain white wall.

Since upgrading to a 1080p projector, the sad irony I've found is that while HD discs look much better, standard DVDs tend to look worse than they did on my previous 720p model. I think the reason for this is that scaling from DVD's 720x480 resolution up to 1920x1080 requires that the output on screen will have 500% more interpolated pixels than original source pixels with real picture detail in them. A 720p projector requires less scaling, so your ratio of real picture detail to interpolated pixels is much more favorable.
