Question about using the PS3 as a blu-ray player
Is something wrong with my PS3? If it's off and I stick in a movie, it accepts the movie and then just sits on a black screen. Most of the remote buttons give me a message like "cannot do x now" or something. I cant get to the main ps3 screen to start the movie or anything, I have to eject it and reinsert it, or first turn on the ps3, then insert the disc.
It's really annoying.
Also is there a way to turn off the player with the BR remote control? I find this very odd as well.

I think this is that HDMI issue some are experiencing. You'll just have to turn it on before putting a BD in. Maybe they'll address this in an update; we'll see.
Hold down the PS button on the remote for a couple of seconds. You'll then be asked if you want to turn off the system.

thanks
yea it's probably an HDMI issue since I just upgraded my TV, it used to be hooked up via component to my old TV . I thought I was going crazy because I didnt remember it always doing this before.
I just love how stuff works fine and they feel the need to come out with advanced new stuff to make sure it doesn't ever work easily again (HDCP, HDMI, ICT maybe some day). I guess this is another "feature" I should have "researched" first.

I have mine hooked up via HDMI (Mitsubishi WD-73727), and I have not had any problems with inserting discs when the power is off. It has always worked fine.
What firmware version are you running? When I first set mine up, it was immediately updated to 1.32, and just recently to 1.50. Maybe the problem exists with pre-1.32 versions?

Yes. There's a "PS" button in the middle of the remote. Press and hold and it'll ask you whether you want to turn off the controller or turn off the system.

I don't have any problems inserting the disc into a powered off PS3. 1080p HDMI connection.
