I believe it downconverts it to two channel.

I'm using a 60g PS3 and am only using optical right now. I was going to get the Panasonic because of the analog outs but decided I'd rather put that extra $ toward the cost of a receiver down the road. its a great player too. audio is great with the optical out by the way.

I'm looking for the 20 gig model at the moment. Where are you guys finding it? I've seen several 60 gig's around here. Just not what I want. I could use the 100 dollar savings towards the Onkyo 804! Thanks

20s are going for great deals on eBay. I've seen several open boxes at BB as people "upgraded" to the 60 gig. But I tend to see 20s mostly at Target.

Thanks. I'll check target later in the week. I'm scrolling thru ebay right now.

I think I will go for the Samsung BUT will wait until the new BDP-1200 comes out, the spec seems quite good for it and starting prices should be around the $800 range.
Thanks for all your input!

I picked up the 60 gig PS3 and the remote. Great remote btw. Fantastic player. I have played about 20 movies with it so far, and um, no games. :)

www.itrackr.com seems like a useful tool for finding stock at your local retailers. I can't vouch for their accuracy (haven't actually tested it myself), but I like the idea of it.

You're thinking of the way that HD DVD players convert DD+ to standard DTS. The Samsung Blu-ray player downconverts 5.1 PCM to 2-channel PCM (the max supported by SPDIF). I assume other Blu-ray players do the same.

This is a big problem, for example, on Kung-Fu Hustle. Sony elected to include the original Cantonese soundtrack only in PCM 5.1 format. The disc also has English and French dubs in DD 5.1, but no Cantonese. If you're watching on a PS3 and don't have an HDMI receiver, you either have to settle for the original language in 2.0 or a dub in 5.1.

The OP is in England. Doesn't the latest firmware upgrade for the Samsung enable region coding which could be a problem since Europe is a different region?

How the hell can you sift through all these? How do you know which ones are "legit" and which aren't? sheesh :(

bunkaroo 01-16-07 10:55 AM

I'm pretty sure I remember my DTS flag coming on when using the PCM track, but I'll have to double-check on of my other PCM titles since Grimm was a rental.

I have my HD-A1 hooked up to the analog outs, and outside of finding some kind of switch I guess I'll just be leaving the BDP-S1 connected via optical. Other than PCM titles, I think I'm probably better of with that anyway since the DTS-HD tracks are just extracting the core.

I supposed I could just move the cables around as needed, but in the long run that might be too much wear and tear.

tacos 01-16-07 10:57 AM

Not sure really. I was just taking a look. I seriously doubt that I would buy from ebay.

A legit PS3 auction will show the ACTUAL item and the receipt.

Any thing less would be uncivilized.

Ha. I can't believe I'm bidding on this stuff. ;)

It's only fair digi. You convinced me to buy a HD-A2, and now I convinced you to get a PS3. Or I'm taking credit for it. Either way, you'll be happy, it's a great machine.

I got my 120 gig 2.5 SATA from ZZF, under $100. WD with a 3 year warranty.

I don't expect to win any of them unless it's a fluke, trust me.

And I think I lost count of how many Toshie's I "sold" on this board alone.

If and when I end up getting a BD machine (whether it's the PS3 or otherwise), I expect the heavens to fall around here. ;)

What's funny is now you can't find the 20gig machines!! They seem to be a tougher find than the 60s (probably because sony loses more money on the 20s than the 60s).

What's your topline on a 20?

That's going to be tough. You might have better luck with a slightly used unit in that case (or at least an opened one).

Have you tried NYC CL?

I have. Everyone wants $600-700. It IS NYC afterall ;)

The way I look at it is that I was/am totally all for HD DVD and I spent $350 on that. It's really non-sensical for me to pay that much MORE for BD when I'm really just doing it...well, to do it, at this point.

FantasticVSDoom 01-16-07 08:11 PM

Yeah, Im waiting for a BD player for under $400 as well (since thats what I paid for my HD-DVD player) but I dont have some credit at Gamestop and some games and dvds to trade in so I may end up getting one from there since in a since I could get one for around $300.

Take it, that's a phenomenal price. Digi, if you want to privately e-mail me the auction link, I'm happy to take a look and see if it's legit or not.
