Jesus, I sound like some sort of LG shill. I've never even used one of their products.

Why would the dvd forum go after Toshiba or Microsoft? AFAIK they have HDi on all of their players from day 1. If its a requirement they have no choice.
If you are talking about optional audio decoding, then both sides have been and continue to be a mess.

BTW I have used Goldstar's AV products, and Lucky Goldstar's* AV products. They are certainly shocking, that's for sure! Though they make good dishwashers...
*Goldstar products are simply labled as LG these days after the parent company decided to change their name from Lucky Goldstar to LG.

As far as the LG Dual Format player is concerned, I hope that TPTB (whether it be the DVD Forum or the upper management at LG or someone else) won't let this player be sold as is.
But, as many have already pointed out, this is progress as is Total HD discs. Perhaps not exactly the way you or I might want it to go, but this certainly is the next step in HD. I have every bit of confidence that in the near future (end of '08?) we will see (1) both players becoming very affordable (

That's true, they do still label some of their products as Goldstar, though the majority are LG these days. Though I'm not sure how the majority of components can be considered the premium brand, a term which suggests some form of exclusivity.

I DO NOT WANT TWO FORMATS.
It's a ridiculously stupid fucking idea.
This is a war. There needs to be one winner (again, I don't care which) or they both die.

And if this keeps up, I honestly hope they BOTH fail. They'd deserve it.
This can't go on forever because the general public will never buy into it and that was the whole point in the first place: picking a successor to DVD to start making money again.

Room for both formats... c'mon... not good for the consumer at all.
Dual players mean dual liscensing fees and technology in one box... More costly players (period).
Dual discs means dual liscensing fees (both camps + liscensing from Time warner for the Total HD technology) and probably less space to expand, or more costly to expand... meaning more expensive discs (period).
Two seperate formats? Now I have to research as to which version of the same movie is better? Or some people can’t get the movies they want be cause they are on the format player they don’t have. Consumers aren’t going to tolerate it. Right now most are waiting for one to win. We want just one to win. That’s why it’s called a standard. DVD was so sucessful because it was a stand alone standard. People just bought a player and the movie they wanted and it worked… they didn’t have to think twice about it.

Warner will continue to receive licensing fees from the DVD (HD DVD) side of the disc, of course. Frankly it still surprises me that they chose to support BD before a player had even been launched in either format.
BTW I hate discs without artwork. Makes them far less user friendly in all sorts of ways.

Holy shit.
As if this wasn't confusing enough...

According to LG execs quoted in today's CED, they're going to release it sans HD DVD logo...it will not be submitted for certification. LG is describing it as a Blu-ray player that happens to play HD DVD movies. It will *not* be upgraded to support HDi; the next gen model will, though.
