I've got a 50" Sony a10, 720p native res...from what I've heard, it's not *horrible* to have something small'ish (27"-32"), but the "SD to HD Jump" is less noticable. So, yes, you'll see a difference...just not as much of one. If you can, spring for a nice 42" 1080p set...you'll thank yourself later =)
SD on a 50", on the other hand...*shudder*...

I done a test with a friend of mine, we picked up a Blu-Ray film for his 53 inch, his couch is around 15 feet back. Couldn't tell a huge difference in the original DVD and the Blu-Ray version, we then moved up to around 8 feet away and the jump was huge. So, viewing distance is really the key. I went home, measured and found that I was 20 feet away from my TV, I've since re-arranged and now am 7.5 feet away from my 51 inch.
