Ok to transport RPTV on it's side?

I'm looking to get a 46" Sony Rear Projection LCD soon. But it won't fit in my car upright. It it ok to lay the box on it's side? The only time I've seen people move these is upright. I don't know what difference it would make but I thought I'd make sure before I did it.

WOW & Good for you, Mo P!

This is what we did, however, YMMV:

We recently bought a 50" Sony SXRD and had to lay it down on its back to transport it and it works great (we've had it for a little over a month) and have never had a problem with it.

We took it out of the box (because we didn't think it'd fit in the car with it), and used a LOT of quilts and pillows so it was seriously protected from banging or bumping around in the back of our Matrix.

If I were buying any TV (and it would fit in the back of our car), I'd do the same, but I'd be very careful to make Damn sure it was secure and packed tight.

Ok, just wondering. I have a Mazda 3 hatchback so it's probably the same size as your Matrix. If you can fit the 50' I should be able to fit the 46'. Thanks!

Someone else around here may have some specific technical advice concerning your set, but in the meantime just BE SERIOUSLY CAREFUL not to let it bump or slide around, and be extra easy on the potholes and the brakes!

Find a friend with a van or truck, honestly.

Failing that, renting a van from U-Haul for a couple of hours isn't too expensive (make sure they actually give you a van, not one of their oversized trucks that they try and foist on you once you show up). Pad it well and have someone sit in the back with it to make sure it doesn't get jostled around too much.

I have heard that is it strongly recommended to keep it upright and NOT lay it down! Do like Bus says, even rent a U-Haul pickup truck for $20.00. Not worth the possible frustration or anything jarring/breaking for that king of purchase.

Just my .05Cents

Well crap. Guess I'll just pay the extra $50 for the delivery. Thanks for the advice.

Thank GAWD for Disclaimers!

Oh well, it worked for us...

(I read somewhere on AVS that it should not be a problem if the unit is placed on its side/back for the ride from store to home.)

But rent the truck or have it delivered! Better be safe than sorry!

Besides, I don't want you posting that you took my advise and now have a cock-eyed TV!

Another choice is Home Depot. They rent trucks for $20 for just over an hour with much less hassle than UHaul. (IME) You don't have to use them with stuff purchased at their store.

Well the TV just went back to regular price so I guess I'm out of luck until it goes back on sale.

Thanks for the advice anyway.
