Uh oh...Superman Returns HD-DVD lock up issue...

FYI: My Wal-Mart broke the street date on the Superman Returns HD-DVD, plus it was mispriced at $19.92 so I had to pick it up. HOWEVER, as I was watching it this evening, the player locked up during the sequence where Superman and Lois go flying. I tried to skip ahead and it wouldn't let me. With enough fanagling I was able to start watching it two chapters past the issue. The chapters in question are 20-22.

I will return the disc after Tuesday and exchange it for another to see if it is the disc or the player. But I'm betting it's the player, I'm not sure if it is a Dual Layer 40GB disc, but if it is, I wonder if this is why it locked up. The Xbox downloaded an update when I put in the disc also, so I wonder if there's a known issue that Microsoft is trying to fix before people start experiencing problems.

Please post your experiences with the disc this week so I can see if others are experiencing this problem.

Doubtful it has anything to do with the disc being dual-layer. 95% of all HD DVDs are dual-layer. I'm betting it's a hardware issue. Did you try powering down the player and turning it back on?

I did try that, but the disc did the same thing, at the same spot. i thought perhaps the player overheated, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Clear the cache on your 360...some say that may work.

What was the price supposed to be?
If it is roughly the same as Amazon, I am going to just pick it up at Wal-Mart.

It's a combo. Chances are it's going to be $27.

Walmart's combo prices have been about $29.99. Maybe they'll make Supes a bit cheaper. I think Target will be $29.99 also.

Since they started their high-def area, my local Target has since carried MI3, Nacho Libre, Xmen 3, Ice Age 2, and King Kong. No doubt they will get Supes as well.

With the recent issues I have had with my A1 I have almost no doubt this disc will glitch at some point.

I was referring to strictly HD DVD releases since I never so much as give Blu-Ray a glance, but since the start of the high def era at Target started, the one here has carried the exact same releases they had on Day 1. Nothing more.

I bought the HD-DVD today and had no problems with chapters 20-22 on my 360 add-on drive. I have noticed volume levels are still lower when played through the drive.

I have the same issue at the CompUSA I work at. They have added a few newer BluRay titles but they still only have the first three HD DVD (The Last Samurai, Phantom of the Opera, and Million Dollar Baby) titles they had available since day one. Although, much to my suprise, we did receive Superman Returns on HD DVD.

Thanks John72Tex. I actually got a replacement disc today and it worked fine all the way through. Must have just been a bad disc.

This isn't a lock up issue, but has anyone else noticed a missing frame in the movie? It occurs at 9:40 when Martha is getting out of her pickup truck. I have the HD DVD version, maybe I should flip over to the standard side and see if it's just inherent in the source material.

I had plenty of skipping issues on my HD-D1 (just an all black version of the A1) during those scenes in question when Superman and Lois go flying at night.

I didn't notice any frame skips on the HD DVD.

I checked the standard def side and I saw the same thing. It just seems to me like the tire on Martha's truck makes this sudden movement. Pretty weird, but since it's not exclusive to the HD side, I'm content that my disc is just fine.

Okay, now I'm having a lock-up issue. After the scene where Clark and Lois talk about saying goodbye in front of the Daily Planet, there's a scene where Superman flies to Lois' home and watches her and her fiancee with his x-ray vision. At the beginning of that scene, the image locks up, and it freezes the whole player. I can get it to stop, but not play afterwards. I had to actually unplug the machine and plug it back in because I couldn't power it off. I'm going to go back to the store and get a replacement, but I've never had a disc act like that before.

I had that happen with my King Kong disc. I just hope Toshiba can get some new firmware out soon.

My A1 had been glitchy lately, but it played Superman Returns perfectly. The movie played fine, but it did hiccup during the Warners promo sequence.

My disk skips during the Lois and Superman flight scene through the you where smoking line. Does both on the 360 and the A1. Best Buy is sold out so no exchange for a few days for me.

Starts to stutter right when they return from the flight through the smoking line on the 360. Just locks up the A1. On the A1 it starts acting up earlier in the flight scene.

No visable flaws on the disk.

Whats wierd is I throw the SD side in the OPPO and it wont play that scene either.

That's exactly where it froze up for me. I just wanted to know if it was a disc error or an XBOX 360 error. Sounds like it's the former.

I watched my replacement disc starting from that point and it was fine. Now I should probably watch the first half again and see if the Superman spying on Lois scene is problematic.
