I hope B&M's have these on shelves next week too, granted, it'll be in very limited quantities I'm sure.

Hi guys,

I'm not technical savy about the electronic, but wondering if you guys can help me if purchasing the HD-A2 is not compatiable with the my current setup.

I have an old receiver Yamaha RX-V800. I hooked my Bose 5.1 cube speakers to this unit. Here's the spec of the receiver:

http://www99.epinions.com/_Yamaha_RX...ay_~full_specs

I have HDTV LCD with hdmi.

1. Will I be able to hook up the HD-A2 to this set? My hearing is not the greatest to tell the difference with all the new audio technology, but i'm already happy with my current audio speakers. I'm just afraid that if I buy it, then I can't get the audio to work on the unit.
2. Do you know if the Toshiba HD-A2 is multi-region for the standard DVD movies? Is it remote hackable?

Thank you so much in advance,

Blake 12-06-06 11:29 PM

It doesn't appear that that receiver has any HDMI inputs. Therefore, you will have to use the optical output of the A2. If your hearing isn't the greatest (mine isn't either), I doubt you would notice the difference between the audio from the optical and the audio from HDMI.

I do not believe any of the Toshiba HD-DVD players have region coding. However, I thought I heard that this may be coming at a later date via a firmware upgrade. But as of now, I don't think they have region coding (not 100% though). But fairly certain.

Also, more good news, people at AVSForum are receiving shipping notifications from (I guess the store with the initials VE is not allowed here) on the HD-A2.

THEY'RE EARLY!!!

I can't wait for mine!! (It's coming from Crutchfield though, not VE)

Hook the HDMI cable to the TV for video, and the optical cable to your receiver for audio. The soundtracks on HD DVD discs will be converted to standard DTS format, which your receiver can handle.

HD DVD discs are not region coded. However, the player enforces region coding on standard DVD discs. It is also not compatible with PAL format DVDs regardless of region coding. There are no known hacks.

I've been reading about people importing UK discs and the Amazon.co.uk site says they are in PAL. How are people getting around this with HD-DVDs? Or is Amazon incorrect?

Amazon is incorrect. No PAL.

Btw...check those bank statements if you ordered through Robert/Value Electronics:

A very large allocation is shipping tomorrow, we are beginning to charge those orders that are shipping tomorrow.

The next allocation is shipping on Monday or Tuesday and all orders will be fulfilled by Thursday, 12/14/06.

Had to talk to Crutchfield today because my TV was damaged during shipment. They still do not show the HD-A2 in the warehouse. Hopefully it'll come in soon.

awesome news...

This HD player is fantastic. Fast loading, great responsive remote control, beautiful chassis, unbelievable picture and audio quality as great as my XA1 playing the same movie on the same Pioneer Elite PROFHD1 50" 1080p plasma display. (I'm using a Gefen 2x1 HDMI splitter so I can quickly switch sources, XA1/A2).

Yes, you heard it right, thanks to Toshiba we are shipping today!!!

Yes, got A2 From BB today! Had my A1 in to their repair facility for over a month and they said not repairable, so gave me exchange for A2. I tried to get A2 before lunch today but had not come in yet!

Behold, got phone call from BB at 1PM and UPS just delivered the first A2 shipment so dashed over and picked it up.

I know there are many questions, and I only had chance to do quick test but so far it's much better than A1 for performance. I checked out the first problem title for most folks with E.O.Days and played TrueHD track flawless not lag, pause or hiccups at all. Then checked out some of KK just to be sure it works and just fine with it.

First thing I noticed on my setup is even better blacks, at least to my eyes. Also much faster, how fast? just like Toshiba says about twice as quick as A1. Another plus is when movie does start don't get all the flashing and video noise like the A1, just starts smooth like it should.

Not a lot of time spent with it yet, so hope this helps take the edge of all you folks still waiting for it to get in your hands. I think it is well worth the wait, but of course my A1 was great for about 6 months before it got sick, hope our new A2's will have better results
Ummm yes I'm buying this sucker early next year.

I'll definitely get the A2 next year. I love the A1, but the A2 will likely be much more friendly playing discs. My A1 has gotten glitchy lately. I'll never get rid of it, but the A2's positive reviews are nice to hear.
