Dan, A technical correction:
The BD30 DOES have 5.1 analog output. But it doesn't decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD-MA on-board, as you suggest. You need to reword that section a bit.
I also highlight a redundant word typo.
If you're looking to use this, there's only one option at the moment: the Panasonic DMP-BD30K (pictured above). It comes out of the box with Final Standard Profile, and has a good deal of other useful features. However, there are two issues that I've found with this particular model. For one thing, it does not have analog outs, and will only send lossless audio (except PCM) as a bitsream, which requires a receiver with an HDMI 1.3. The other issue I see is that it has no ethernet port, which means it will never be upgradeable to Profile 2.0, an optional update that would allow web connectivity on discs. However, at with prices starting at $499, this is cheaper than many other players on the market.

"The format war spurned both HD DVD and Blu-ray to ever more glorious heights."
"spurned"? I think you meant "spurred"!
Enjoyed the column. It has been an amazing year for high def.

Dan, I don't know if you wrote the blurb on the front page or if Geoff did, but I'm personally not fond of the statement, "the general consensus is that this move signifies the end of HD DVD". That may well turn out to be the case, but I'd like to see what the real fallout from this decision is before making such a sweeping statement.
As for "general consensus", there was a lot of concensus in certain quarters that other studios would abadon Blu-ray when Paramount did, but that obviously never happened. Just a week ago, the general concensus was that Warner would announce HD DVD exclusity at CES. General concensus doesn't amount to much these days. I prefer verifiable facts, and I know that you do as well.
(As I'm sure you know, this is not intended as a criticism of you or the column you wrote. That blurb just rubs me the wrong way, and I think it leaves readers with the impression that DVDTalk has now chosen sides in the format war.)

I am not angry about anything. WB made a decision that they felt was in their best interest, just as Paramount did last year. Considering that I own both formats, so long as movies continue to be released in High Definition, it doesn't matter to me which color case they come in.
However, rushing to judgement is not good for anyone, no matter which side you fall on. Many fanboys dumped their PS3s and Blu-ray players on eBay after the Paramount announcement. That was foolish, and so is much of the behavior going on now.

I don't think it's a rush to judgement because people have been analyzing what the consequences would be of this decision for several months. We didn't necessarily know which way Warner would go, but most realized there was a good chance they'd go to one format or the other. So we've had time to analyze what the impact would be for whatever decision they made. So a decision being made wasn't a surprise like the Paramount situation. The decision to go Blu may have been a surprise to some, but not that there was going to be a decision made.

Hey Josh, I didn't actually write the blurb on this one. John wrote it, condensing the points I made in the article. I'll see if we can tweak it a little.

Why is it that WB should shoulder most of the blame? Disney and FOX were firmly planted in the SONY camp from go. Scapegoating one studio for the demise of an entire format is juvenile at best. Not unlike some of the posters in this forum. Just let it go.....geez.
