Wow... That Sony comment from earlier nailed it:

One new feature SIXAXIS does have will become an addiction for video-philes everywhere. A click of the Select button brings up a transparent gray bar across the top of the screen. Within this bar is the current audio output with kbps readout and the video compression codec used on the disc with a dynamic bitrate readout that is always in motion. I know some of the hardcore video-philes who get ahold of a PS3 are going to leave this bar running for entire films in hopes of detecting that one precise moment when the bitrate peaks.

I was considering it, but then decided not to, since I have the DVD I doubt I will ever watch it again and don't want to buy stuff just for the sake of having it. I was mostly curious about the region-free stuff, which Emily Rose satisfied (probably another title I'll never watch again, but I didn't have that one on DVD).

Amazon removes the VAT for purchases shipped to the US.

matome 11-17-06 10:01 AM

Yep, you should have seen the same reduction on the Emily Rose disc as well.

ianholm 11-17-06 11:36 AM

You guys are right, the £2 came off the other disc as well. I didn't even notice that one. Cool beans!

Did anyone pick up Hostel from Amazon Uk? Please review if so. :)

Just got home from seeing Casino Royale and guess what? Bond watches a Blu-Ray disc in the movie...the sony marketing machine at work! Guess I shouldn't have been surprised. Casino Royale may be a movie that gets me to buy into blu-ray.

Supermallet 11-17-06 11:07 PM

I thought Casino Royale was a prequel? Shouldn't it take place in the early 60's?

I have to admit to not keeping up, but I believe that Casino Royale is supposed to be to Bond what Batman Begins is to the Batman franchise.

Supermallet 11-17-06 11:11 PM

Ah. Well, it's not like they referenced back between films all that much, anyway. Usually it was that consortium of bad guys in the Connery ones, but after he left, not too many of the films mentioned events from the others.

Supermallet 11-18-06 01:01 AM

Hey! I just noticed John's review of the Elvis Costello BD. I love Elvis Costello, does that company also release on HD? Ironically, more than any movie, stuff like that would get me to switch to BD more quickly.

It's Eagle Rock Entertainment. Most of their titles have been only on BD, but they did release that disc with The Pat Metheny Group on HD-DVD.

Yep, Reboot of the franchise. I don't think I've ever seen product placement this bad in a big budget movie.

Long camera shots aimed at Sony Ericsson cell phones, a security system at a hotel based on Blu-Ray technology. Btw, I could have sworn that was the Sony Blu-Ray player which has yet to see the light of day! I also saw a Sony camera, Sony TV, multiple Sony Vaios on display throughout the entire movie ....

back to topic .... :)

My interest in this movie is quickly dissolving...

I wouldn't let product placement get in the way. At rottentomatoes.com, this has a 95% rating, 124 positive reviews out of 130. That's incredible for a Bond film these days. This one will likely be a day & date Blu-ray title, but I'm not sure the older films will join it.

But it was produced by the evil Sony Empire ...

I can't wait to see this and the new Rocky. Hopefully we will see the Bond legacy on Blu Ray very soon. I think that would sell alot of players.

mdc3000 11-18-06 08:48 AM

Yeah, don't let the product placement stop you, great flick... however, if you're looking for it, it will start to get to you... I honestly thought the only things keeping James Bond from busting out a PS3 and playing it during a scene was that Sony didn't have enough prototypes to give one to the filmmakers...well, that and Bond would have to tear himself away from Eva Green's sweet ass.

I held off on these recent new Bond sets in anticipation of the blu-rays. Looking forward to them!

Mr. Cinema 11-18-06 09:55 AM

This is YMMV, but my local Best Buy has Kingdom of Heaven mispriced at $29.99. Had 8 copies all with the same pricing. The rest of their Fox titles are $34.99. I also had a $5 reward zone coupon, so that helped out even more. I'm glad to own this disc, but I thought it was supposed to have some of the previous features on the 4-disc set. Looks like there isn't anything on here. Out of that 50 gig of space, I bet there was enough room for some of them.

Bcolon 11-18-06 10:44 AM

Anyone else having problems finding the new Blu Ray releases at DDD and DVDPlanet. I would like to give them some more of my money, but can't if they won't put titles like Fantastic Four, Speed, and Behind Enemy Lines up on their website!

Mr. Cinema 11-18-06 10:50 AM

Several members at AVS are reporting playback issues with Speed on their Sammy. All have the latest firmware, but the disc won't play. This is the only Fox title that may be a faulty disc. I was going to buy Speed, but I think I'll wait and see if more users report the same info.

Bcolon 11-18-06 10:54 AM

Has anyone tried to use the $10.00 off Google checkout combined with the new 20% off coupon?

Bcolon 11-18-06 10:59 AM

No go:(

Mr. Cinema 11-18-06 11:19 AM

I put Kingdom of Heaven in for a few minutes. It may be a faulty disc on my Sammy. The color would change to green and back to normal a few times, as if it and my component connection weren't agreeing with each other. Haven't tried with HDMI, but the A1 owns that one.

I have the latest and greatest firmware. X3 played flawlessly the other night. I'll replay the disc later this evening. Right now, the sun is glaring through my apt so checking out BD titles isn't the best option right now. Every other movie has been just fine on my unit. So I'm a little bummed. :(

matome 11-18-06 11:29 AM

I should have Speed on Monday, so I'll give that a spin then. KOH isn't my thing so I don't have that one.

I would imagine they will show up on DDD tomorrow, when their 20% off sale is over. :) DVDEmpire has them all in stock at 30% off.
