It's not currently part of anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it out sometime this year,'' Bishop said on Jan. 8.

in other words, it's not likely to happen.
"not currently part of anything", "probably", and "sometime this year" are non-statements.

Still though, if they do it, good for them.

SONY PICTURES TO INCLUDE PORTABLE MOVIE FILES ON BLU-RAY DISCS

Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp.'s film studio will add a feature to its Blu-ray DVDs that allows copies of movies to be moved to laptops and other devices, as part of an effort to gain wider acceptance of the parent company's high-definition format.

Sony Pictures Entertainment will include portable files on Blu-Ray DVDs that can be transferred without a download, David Bishop, head of Sony's home entertainment unit, said in an interview this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Sony may add the feature this year, Bishop said.

``It's not currently part of anything on our current release schedule, but we'll probably roll it out sometime this year,'' Bishop said on Jan. 8.

Well to access this, you would need a computer with a BD drive, which is prohibitively expensive, so the "wider acceptance" statement is form without substance, par for course with the BDA.

Or use the PS3.

This kinda got me excited, actually. If they do, in fact, implement this, and if it is downloadable to the Playstation line, this might be really cool.

For example, if they offered the same movie in a much lower quality and smaller size file that I could transfer to my PSP (when I get one!) this would be awesome!

matome 01-11-07 12:54 PM

That's basically the gist. You should be able to directly connect the PSP to the PS3 and do the transfer that way.

I know right now the cheapest one is a PS3, but I really dislike Sony in general (don't want to get into that debate.. :D), so I would like to avoid the PS3 and just buy a stand alone Blu-Ray player in the near future.

You kinda can get one right now;

Go to Sonystyle.com and look down the page a little for the Sony credit card. You will see they are advertising $100 rebate after your first purchase that is applied to your card. Get this card and buy a 20gig PS3 for $500. You will automatically see the $100 come off your bill several weeks later.

See, this makes much more sense then the stupid UMD movies they were releasing for the PSP. If I buy a movie, it is going to be the kind I can watch on my TV and then turn into an AVI that I can watch on my PSP. With this, Sony will definitely make me a buyer of BR.

And that is how I'll be getting a $500 PS3. Looks like I won't have to wait until 2008 for a pricedrop.

Again, that requires another add-on (the PSP).

This is not a real benefit to only but a small number of potential HD adopters.

I ain't opening up a credit card for a PS3. Is it really that desperate?

Well, the SonyStyle card has other rewards benefits to it besides the $100.

As a counterpoint, would you open up a Toshiba CC to save $100 on the A2? Same difference.

Hell no.

I wouldn't open up another credit card for any reason.

I have really good credit but I also had my identity stolen several years ago...so opening up any credit card is a bitch and a half.

Wouldnt that be $400?? I thought the 20gb was $499 anyways.

I was just referring to transferring the mini-movie file from the BD to be played back on the PSP. As far as transferring the movie to a laptop, you could use memory sticks or a network connection I would imagine.

I think he meant the 60gb. no?

And what's the interest rate on that card, 45%?

Exactly. I thought about that as well.

I highly agree. I've got my bank debit card and AMEX, and I'm even apprehensive about having those 2. I'm also probably over-protective of my credit rating as well though.

I bet if they knew you like we do they would have moved along.

I mean, who the hell would want to be you?

Well that would be illegal as to usury :)

I'm sure it's high, but as with any rewards card, you shouldn't use it as a card that you carry a balance on.

1st 12 months 0%
15.24% after that.

Of course, it doesn't matter if you don't carry a balance or if you are just using it to get the $100 off and pay it off in less than 12 months.

cultshock 01-11-07 07:51 PM

Yeah, just pay off the credit card every month and the interest rate isn't an issue. :)

I'm thinking on getting in on that Sony deal.

Don't celebrate too much just yet and assume that you can buy the disc and that's it. It remains to be seen how they would handle this, but I would be very surprised if they just let you copy the movie over without authorization and payment (even if it's relatively cheap, like $5). They have to stop people from just copying them as many times as they want, especially people who merely borrow or rent the discs. The movies will probably be protected with DRM similar to iTunes, the difference being the bandwidth savings of copying them from the discs instead of downloading them.
