No, there are extras on the HD DVD version that are not on the BD version.

The upcoming re-mastered Fifth Element has a 16-bit PCM track from the old issue and a 20 or 24-bit TrueHD track on the same disc. Sony said on AVS that they are doing it to see what format the consumers want from now on. Could be the same thing going on with 300, higher bit for TrueHD and 16-bit for PCM.

I thought both hd-dvd and bd were going to have TrueHD for 300? Has that changed?

The only differences was that the HD-DVD was a combo disc and had IME.

According BV's statement yesterday, this is an erroneous report and there are NO plans to release LOST on BD at this point.

Panasonic has released firmware v2.1 for the BD10 and BD10A listing "playability and stability" improvements.

There will be a public poll on AVS after the release. Sony has done this many times, which has lead to changes on BD discs due to what the customers want on AVS.

While I am definitely in favor of moving to TrueHD over PCM, some people are going to think the process wasn't fair. After all, sure, they would choose TrueHD if it's 24-bit and PCM is 16-bit, but there are people on AVS who want 24-bit PCM. So, while I would be glad to see TrueHD chosen, I just know there are going to be people who swear the PCM track would sound better than the TrueHD track if it was 24-bit.

I can see why Sony won't offer 24-bit PCM. It's such a space hog. And if Sony goes full steam for TrueHD, then I can only imagine that many more standalone players would suddenly feature TrueHD support. I'm sure there will be people who will argue till their faces turn blue that PCM is incontrovertibly better than TrueHD, but they're the same damn thing, except TrueHD is variable bitrate. Ask any compressionist which they'd rather use, and they'll tell you TrueHD. It'll give you the same sound while leaving more space for picture and extras to exist on the same disc. Why do you think Pirates was able to look so good with 24-bit PCM? Because all the extras except one were on a second disc.

I haven't been following BR all that much, but this sounds like a "new" price cut.

Superman Returns is getting remastered with both PCM and TrueHD tracks on the same disc for the pack-in with the new Pioneer BD player, according to blu-ray.com.

A couple of articles posted on AVS mention that Sony is shipping the new BDP-S300 this week to retailers. The manual is available online. On page 48, it lists Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD for audio. At $499, I think I may get this for my standalone player.

Looks like the BDP-S1 is getting a firmware update soon that will enable it to decode DD+ and Dolby TrueHD. I think it's then safe to assume the BDP-S300 will receive a similar update when it's released. If so, then that'll be my standalone unit. $499 doesn't sound that frightening.
