Casino Royale is now #90 at Amazon on the first day, The Departed is #91. First time either format has 2 titles simultaneously in the top 100.

Interesting Lion's Gate stuff:
Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures' SAW III 'Three-Peats' at Number One on DVD Charts While Also Claiming Most Successful Week One Blu-Ray Debut to Date Lionsgate (NYSE: LGF), the premier independent filmed entertainment studio, and Twisted Pictures sold 1.6 million units its first day and finished the week in the top spot with 2.5 million units sold. Also, according to Rentrak Home Essentials, SAW III Blu-Ray disc is the largest and most successful Blu-Ray debut to date. That same strategy carries over into our Blu-ray campaigns, with SAW III being our third number one title this month. We are seeing huge growth within the category as consumers are able to experience what Blu-ray has to offer with titles that enhance and display the format's capabilities." |
The Lionsgate releases have pretty much been driving Blu-ray over the last month IMO:
A. As the "smaller-tier" studio they have limited catalog and have been releasing the bulk of their best stuff. B. Their new releases fit the PS3 demographic like a glove. (Well, according to Fox's info on what type of demographic buys the PS3) |
Yeah, I can't wait for Reservoir Dogs and American Psycho on Tuesday!

AVS guy who got them early says the PQ is great on both. Less features than SD-DVD but I don't care! |

it seems that NONE of the BD die-hards care about extras. On this board or any other. -rolleyes- I always wonder how they would feel if BD were the one with all the extras and HD DVD had none. |

I hear those over and over about how BD doesn't have the extras blah blah blah, but do we keep forgetting how these studios love to double dip. I understand that HD-DVD is able to keep all the previous extras but you know what? I wouldn't doubt for a second that Universal will end up re-releasing these later down the line. This time the extras will be created in HD.
What I would rather have are HD specific extras like what Tokyo Drift and Crank have rather than them porting the extras from the previous releases. I would like the extras from the previous discs, but I have already a shitload of discs I haven't even watched yet and the DVDs that I do have I've barely watched any of the extras. I wonder if there have been any studies on the percentage of people who watch extras on discs. I'll only watch extras of movies that I really like, not sure about the rest of you. Edit: Wanted to add that my main concern is PQ and AQ and extras as a bonus. Tokyo Drift was a cool little feature that I liked but if that had to sacrifice PQ/AQ then I would say drop it. |

I'm sure most of us probably have the previous versions and being collector's I would find it hard to get rid of the disc I have just to be a completist. Considering this is DVDtalk I don't think I'm alone. |

As for double dipping, of course there will be double dipping. Sometimes a double dip is worth it, sometimes it isn't. The trick is to not buy movies where they're purposely setting you up for the double dip. A movie with no extras when the SD has the extras is a perfect example. Could a studio take a movie with a lot of extras add more later or re-releases them with extras in HD? Of course. But there's no way to know for certain whether or not they'll do that. But it's pretty obvious when they take extras off of discs, they've already got a double dip in the works. That's why it's important to not take that. They're giving you less content and charging you more money and in the end you know they're going to come back and say "Oh, here's the new edition, it's got all the extras in HD including those ones we took off the last time!" If you buy both, you're telling them that's okay. Even if you don't buy the second edition, you're still telling them it's okay to give you less for more. And it's not. You can say extras don't matter, but it's not about extras. It's about us telling the studios that we won't put up with them taking off any kind of feature on a format that's meant to be more advanced than regular DVD, and costs more to boot. |

Considering this is DVDtalk I don't think I'm alone. I don't want just great A/V quality. I don't want great extras at the expense of A/V quality. I want it all...and I would suspect the general public would as well. No point in taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back. For EITHER of these formats to succeed, you have to build on the monumentally successful formula that is DVD. You don't remove any aspects of that formula and you certainly don't charge more for less. Doing either and expecting to "win" is ludicrous. I've been "collecting" extras since I was a very little kid. I would record every "making of" special of a movie that came on TV and I'm still a part of various communities (originaltrilogy.com being one of them) that archive and "preserve" these extras. I don't care about just the movies. I care about everything that went into making them as well. Again, I want it all. And I don't think that's asking for too much if they're going to ask US to re-buy our movie collections. |

I agree with his point about double dipping. That's why I'm waiting for BD and to some extent HD-DVD to get out these quick releases and then later on down the line when the inevitable double dips come and then purchase those.
The one thing I love about BD is the fact that there are a lot more uncompressed tracks and that is a major reason for me not to buy a lot of HD-DVDs. So far I've only bought 3 discs that don't have a True-HD soundtrack. I love great audio and hate the fact that some HD-DVDs skimped on uncompressed soundtracks like Tokyo Drift and King Kong. You say that the DVD formula should be built on and I agree with that, but I don't see either format doing it well right now. HD-DVD is a step ahead but in some respects they are a step behind as well. |

They're not "worse" than DVD in any respect that I could think of (other than costing more). |
