X-Men: The Last Stand - Blu-ray Release 11/14
This is a high profile release that I think deserves its own thread.
from The Digital Bits: "We've just learned that 20th Century Fox will officially announce today the Blu-ray Disc release of X-Men: The Last Stand on 11/14 (SRP $39.98). The disc is timed to street just a few days before the 11/17 debut of Sony's BD-enabled PlayStation 3 game system. The title is expected to feature 1080p AVC video, DTS HD 6.1 audio, audio commentary with director Brett Ratner and writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg, audio commentary with producers Avi Avrad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, 12 deleted/extended scenes, a "Marvel Trivia Track" and more. All of the extras will reportedly be in high-definition." This is probably a BD50 with all HD extras and the DTS HD track. |
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Seeking to ride PlayStation 3 momentum, 20th Century Fox is rush-releasing "X-Men: The Last Stand" to Blu-ray Disc on November 14, three days before Sony's next-generation video game console makes its U.S. debut. Executives from studios supporting the high-definition optical disc format believe PS3 will be the Trojan horse that gives Blu-ray an unbeatable advantage over rival HD-DVD. Both formats are vying to succeed standard DVD as consumers transition to HDTV. PS3, which will hit stores at retail prices starting at $499, comes with a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive, while the other hot game console in the market, Microsoft's Xbox 360, has an add-on HD-DVD drive available for about $200. "The demographics between 'X-Men' and PlayStation 3 are a near-perfect match," said Steve Feldstein, senior vp marketing communications for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. "This is the biggest new release yet for Blu-ray, and we're working closely with retailers and others to ensure that when people are buying their PS3s, they're going to know they can get 'X-Men' to play on it. "PlayStation is by far the dominant game platform, and this should put questions about format wars to rest." Fox's other Blu-ray titles coming November 14 include "Behind Enemy Lines," "Fantastic Four," "Kingdom of Heaven," "Kiss of the Dragon," "The Omen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," "Speed" and "The Transporter." The Blu-ray version of "X-Men: The Last Stand," which lists for $39.98, includes both the film -- with a domestic gross of $234.4 million, the year's No. 3 movie -- and all bonus materials in high-definition. The film itself is authored in HDMV with AVC (MPEG 4 compression) and features 6.1 DTS ES HD Lossless Master Audio. Bonus features include two commentary tracks (one from director Brett Ratner with writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg, the other with producers Avi Arad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter), 12 alternate or extended scenes, and a "Marvel Trivia Track" consisting of color graphics that pop up throughout the film with inside information on characters and events in the Marvel universe. The standard DVD of the third film in the "X-Men" franchise was released October 3 and has since sold more than 6 million units. |
If this is legit, then I have to applaud Fox for releasing such a high-profile title with, what appears to be, a rather good treatment. It's about time Blu-Ray got an exclusive big movie release.
But that's a hell of an MSRP. |

Blu-ray definitely needed an exclusive major blockbuster release. Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven are fine, but they needed something with massive commercial appeal.

I've been waiting for this to be sprung. I was almost going to pick up the SD in the meantime, but I'm glad I held off. Hopefully , they'll announce the first two films by Christmas.

If this was X2 chances are I would be ALL OVER IT!!!! :D
I just don't know why Fox is holding back some of their big name titles. |

Either they're wanting to surprise us with all those HD extras... or that's all that's gonna be on there. Another unimpressive release extra's wise.

Two commentaries and a dozen deleted scenes? That's not bad for a release. I wish every disc had trailers for the movie (and TV spots etc) but I know sometimes rights issues get in the way.
I hope that all extras are in HD by next year. Paramount, Sony and now Fox are doing the right thing with their releases. Are there other movies besides Click, MI3, and X3 that have all-HD extras? |
Looks like I'll have to ebay my DVD of this. I thought this wasn't coming till after the Holidays? Anyway, I will get this, Broken Arrow, Crank & The Princess Bride.

Two commentaries are good, but no behind-the-scenes of any kind is where my dissapointment is. But I'm not going with BD yet anyways, so hopefully when I do in a few yrs a re-released boxset to coincide w/ Wolverine will be coming out. I'm sure audio and video will be awesome, but I demand more extras for my money... esp the likely $30 in-store price. |

I picked up MI:III for $26.99 at Wally World yesterday. |

Actually, not all of the SD DVd's had 24. Some only had 10 scenes. And as to why this one was released over X2, it was the highest grossing of the 3, so it makes sense that it would be the first. Though I'm sure we'd all love X2 more.

Someone over on AVS stated a while ago that Sony was riding Disney pretty hard to release the first POTC for the holidays so it wouldn't be a surprise to see it announced.

Um, no. Fox made an error and pressed some X3 DVD's with the the 23 deleted scenes that were supposed to be going to an upcoming 2-disc SE. The original DVD release was only supposed to have the 12 scenes which many unlucky people got.

doesnt mean the other 11 deleted scenes dont exist. why arent they going to be on the br release. |

I believe Sony stated that the BD release of the Da Vinci Code will have HD special features also which is why it's not being released day-and-date.

According to the Target ad for 11/12 posted in the DVD Bargains, X3 on Blu-ray will be $23.99. Also, they mention 20% all Blu-ray movies. Too bad their selection so far has been miniscule.

Someone on AVS scored a copy early at Best Buy. The downside of course is the price is marked $34.99. They will have it on sale next week for $22.99. The other downside is this is on a BD-25 disc but it did use the AVC codec.

Sweet. I'm gonna try the local Best Buys to see If I can snag one early, but I doubt it.

Here's a review, looks like the extras are in SD. So much for that pre-release hype of BD50 and HD extras. Still, it got high video ratings and even higher audio. The core DTS HD Master is 1.5 mbps, so that's nice. I'm sure the full track will be incredible. But we won't know until next year. What I do like from Fox is they are showing alot of specs on the packaging. I'm sure AVC encoded at 18 mbps will look solid.
