X-Men: The Last Stand - Blu-ray Release 11/14

This is a high profile release that I think deserves its own thread.

from The Digital Bits:

"We've just learned that 20th Century Fox will officially announce today the Blu-ray Disc release of X-Men: The Last Stand on 11/14 (SRP $39.98). The disc is timed to street just a few days before the 11/17 debut of Sony's BD-enabled PlayStation 3 game system. The title is expected to feature 1080p AVC video, DTS HD 6.1 audio, audio commentary with director Brett Ratner and writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg, audio commentary with producers Avi Avrad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, 12 deleted/extended scenes, a "Marvel Trivia Track" and more. All of the extras will reportedly be in high-definition."

This is probably a BD50 with all HD extras and the DTS HD track.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Seeking to ride PlayStation 3 momentum, 20th Century Fox is rush-releasing "X-Men: The Last Stand" to Blu-ray Disc on November 14, three days before Sony's next-generation video game console makes its U.S. debut.

Executives from studios supporting the high-definition optical disc format believe PS3 will be the Trojan horse that gives Blu-ray an unbeatable advantage over rival HD-DVD. Both formats are vying to succeed standard DVD as consumers transition to HDTV.

PS3, which will hit stores at retail prices starting at $499, comes with a built-in Blu-ray Disc drive, while the other hot game console in the market, Microsoft's Xbox 360, has an add-on HD-DVD drive available for about $200.

"The demographics between 'X-Men' and PlayStation 3 are a near-perfect match," said Steve Feldstein, senior vp marketing communications for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. "This is the biggest new release yet for Blu-ray, and we're working closely with retailers and others to ensure that when people are buying their PS3s, they're going to know they can get 'X-Men' to play on it.

"PlayStation is by far the dominant game platform, and this should put questions about format wars to rest."

Fox's other Blu-ray titles coming November 14 include "Behind Enemy Lines," "Fantastic Four," "Kingdom of Heaven," "Kiss of the Dragon," "The Omen," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," "Speed" and "The Transporter."

The Blu-ray version of "X-Men: The Last Stand," which lists for $39.98, includes both the film -- with a domestic gross of $234.4 million, the year's No. 3 movie -- and all bonus materials in high-definition. The film itself is authored in HDMV with AVC (MPEG 4 compression) and features 6.1 DTS ES HD Lossless Master Audio. Bonus features include two commentary tracks (one from director Brett Ratner with writers Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg, the other with producers Avi Arad, Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter), 12 alternate or extended scenes, and a "Marvel Trivia Track" consisting of color graphics that pop up throughout the film with inside information on characters and events in the Marvel universe.

The standard DVD of the third film in the "X-Men" franchise was released October 3 and has since sold more than 6 million units.

If this is legit, then I have to applaud Fox for releasing such a high-profile title with, what appears to be, a rather good treatment. It's about time Blu-Ray got an exclusive big movie release.

But that's a hell of an MSRP.

Oliver Clothesoff 11-02-06 08:05 AM

Those are pretty impressive specs.

Mr. Cinema 11-02-06 08:14 AM

Blu-ray definitely needed an exclusive major blockbuster release. Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven are fine, but they needed something with massive commercial appeal.

matome 11-02-06 08:25 AM

I've been waiting for this to be sprung. I was almost going to pick up the SD in the meantime, but I'm glad I held off. Hopefully , they'll announce the first two films by Christmas.

digitalfreaknyc 11-02-06 08:28 AM

Put it down in the record books that I said this:

"BD might have finally got it right."

The above statement is pending any and all reviews upon release of this title. ;)

word :D

rexinnih 11-02-06 08:59 AM

Great news but announcing it two weeks before release?

candyrocket786 11-02-06 10:41 AM

If this was X2 chances are I would be ALL OVER IT!!!! :D

I just don't know why Fox is holding back some of their big name titles.

Perhaps they're waiting for the Sony player to be released, when Blu-Ray has its "official" launch...:)

dvd182 11-02-06 11:06 AM

If this starts a trend of good releases, I might actually considering keeping one of the PS3s I have on preorder.

my guess is to test the viability of the market for the format.

Artman 11-02-06 12:34 PM

Either they're wanting to surprise us with all those HD extras... or that's all that's gonna be on there. Another unimpressive release extra's wise.

The Bus 11-02-06 12:46 PM

Two commentaries and a dozen deleted scenes? That's not bad for a release. I wish every disc had trailers for the movie (and TV spots etc) but I know sometimes rights issues get in the way.

I hope that all extras are in HD by next year. Paramount, Sony and now Fox are doing the right thing with their releases. Are there other movies besides Click, MI3, and X3 that have all-HD extras?

ianholm 11-02-06 01:15 PM

Looks like I'll have to ebay my DVD of this. I thought this wasn't coming till after the Holidays? Anyway, I will get this, Broken Arrow, Crank & The Princess Bride.

Yeah pretty good compared to the other Fox releases which so far have had just commentaries. The deleted/alt scenes maybe total ten minutes. Did you watch the standard DVD? That actually had 24...

Two commentaries are good, but no behind-the-scenes of any kind is where my dissapointment is. But I'm not going with BD yet anyways, so hopefully when I do in a few yrs a re-released boxset to coincide w/ Wolverine will be coming out.

I'm sure audio and video will be awesome, but I demand more extras for my money... esp the likely $30 in-store price.

I spent the past few days in San Francisco for a couple of Disney press events, and one of the PR folks for BVHE said the extras for Pirates of the Caribbean 2 were produced in HD, even though there isn't a Blu-ray release on the horizon quite yet.

Maybe they're taking a cue from Warner. :D

Pretty much the industry standard, tho'.

Similar examples:

Sony: Click and Monster House were both $38.99
Universal: Slither, Tokyo Drift, and The Break-Up were all $39.98
Paramount: Nacho Libre and MI:III are $39.99
Warner: All of their day/date combos have been $39.99

FWIW, you'll be able to find 'em closer to $27-$28 at some stores. I picked up MI:III for $26.99 at Wally World yesterday.

Mr. Cinema 11-02-06 02:12 PM

Wasn't The Man Room the first site predicting the 11/14 date? Those guys are good.

Did they mention anything about the first Pirates or Chronicles of Narnia??? I have a feeling the 2nd Pirates will have a BD release near May '07.

Boogie76 11-02-06 02:14 PM

Actually, not all of the SD DVd's had 24. Some only had 10 scenes. And as to why this one was released over X2, it was the highest grossing of the 3, so it makes sense that it would be the first. Though I'm sure we'd all love X2 more.

it might have been the highest grossing, but it wasn't my favourite of the series, by a long shot.

You're probably right about the tie-in with #3 in May, though the original one is on the Disney preview clip with Pearl Harbor that runs on their current BD's.

First Pirates was mentioned, but I don't remember if they gave a tentative release date. I kind of walked into that conversation midstream.

Any conversations about HD DVD? ;)

Yes, but all of the high-definition releases are being promoted by a completely different group right now, and the person I asked (someone other than the rep mentioned above) wasn't that familiar with Blu-ray plans, let alone anything related to HD DVD. If/when Blu-ray takes off, it's likely to fall under their umbrella.

DthRdrX 11-02-06 05:21 PM

Someone over on AVS stated a while ago that Sony was riding Disney pretty hard to release the first POTC for the holidays so it wouldn't be a surprise to see it announced.

Wow, I had not realized that. Thank goodness for Amazon and that 10% discount, on top of already low prices.

whotony 11-02-06 09:03 PM

i guess there wasnt enough space on this to put all 23 deleted scenes on it

matome 11-03-06 08:39 AM

Um, no. Fox made an error and pressed some X3 DVD's with the the 23 deleted scenes that were supposed to be going to an upcoming 2-disc SE. The original DVD release was only supposed to have the 12 scenes which many unlucky people got.

whotony 11-03-06 09:16 AM

umm, i know that.

doesnt mean the other 11 deleted scenes dont exist.

why arent they going to be on the br release.

So they can force you to double-dip in 3 years. I hope no one thought that would stop this generation. Of course, everyone knows my stance on extras, so no double-dipping for me!

dkny75 11-03-06 11:12 AM

I believe Sony stated that the BD release of the Da Vinci Code will have HD special features also which is why it's not being released day-and-date.

I'd bet money this was a title they were saving for as a BD50 release. A 2 1/2 hour with a PCM track and HD extras certainly spells 50 gig. A thread on AVS mentions this will likely hit BD early next year.

Havok83 11-04-06 05:47 AM

Good news on a release date! I was asking about this last month and thought it would come out next year.

Mr. Cinema 11-04-06 06:17 PM

According to the Target ad for 11/12 posted in the DVD Bargains, X3 on Blu-ray will be $23.99. Also, they mention 20% all Blu-ray movies. Too bad their selection so far has been miniscule.

Mr. Cinema 11-07-06 02:58 PM

Someone on AVS scored a copy early at Best Buy. The downside of course is the price is marked $34.99. They will have it on sale next week for $22.99. The other downside is this is on a BD-25 disc but it did use the AVC codec.

Here's the image from the thread:

matome 11-07-06 03:12 PM

Sweet. I'm gonna try the local Best Buys to see If I can snag one early, but I doubt it.

Mr. Cinema 11-10-06 08:35 AM

Here's a review, looks like the extras are in SD. So much for that pre-release hype of BD50 and HD extras. Still, it got high video ratings and even higher audio. The core DTS HD Master is 1.5 mbps, so that's nice. I'm sure the full track will be incredible. But we won't know until next year. What I do like from Fox is they are showing alot of specs on the packaging. I'm sure AVC encoded at 18 mbps will look solid.
