What about when using component? Does this make a difference being on or off?

I was at Best Buy this weekend and noticed that FMJ was $18. I figured that Warner recognized these discs were sub-par, and discounted them accordingly.

Being an older catalog title likely had more to do with that than anything regarding quality. I don't see DVDs get reduced in price because they have lousy transfers.

Theoretically, no. All high definition should be using the 0 IRE "enhanced" black level. Turning that setting on or off should really only affect the composite and S-video outputs.

That's the theory, anyway. If you play with it an notice a difference, choose the one that looks the best on your screen regarding the balance between black levels and shadow detail. Niether one is "right" or "wrong". They just use slightly different scales.

Yeah, I see that price at all the BB's with Lethal Weapon as well, but if you bring it up to the counter it rings up at $24.99. You have to point it out to the cashier.

I looked over the list of BD exclusives just now and they finally have enough titles of interest to make me start seriously thinking about adding a BD player to my A1. All these refurb Sammy deals are tempting. Must resist urge and wait a little longer.

The impatience is astounding.

Why one wouldn't wait till the new year to see what the studios decide is beyond me.

Are there really that many exclusives that have already been released that have HD DVD quality that would make people jump?

For me:

Monster House
Black Hawk Down
Kingdom of Heaven

Are those movies worth $200 each to me? No.

Looking around AVS, there are plenty of people who are pulling the trigger and getting the Samsung. All their reports have been positive. A lot of people pulled the trigger on the Toshiba because it was $500. If they can get the Samsung for around the same price, why wouldn't they commit?

Only 1 of those have already been released.

I don't look to AVS for sanity.

If they already bought the HD-DVD player, I could still see why they may not also want a BD player yet. Even at $500, that makes the total cost of player hardware around $1000, which is more than some want to spend at this point.

Now, those who wanted BD but were waiting for the player prices to drop, those I could understand.

Let me clear up my current position so no one gets the wrong idea. The main reason I am getting the urge is the combination of preorders and the now much more afforable Samsung player. I am still waiting though because I planned to wait until spring to see what the studios do and what the second gen hardware looks like.

I don't think anyone should have to list reasons why they are thinking of getting the Samsung. If you want all your content in HD right now, the only option is to support both formats.

exactly my point.

lack of patience. If you've got the money and a lack of patience, go for it.

Those with patience are the ones who aren't buying into either format, and are waiting for a victor.

Patience isn't the word I'm looking for. The victors are those who have already chosen...wisely.

This isn't going to end well.

Honestly, a thread about "I bought Blu-ray!" is supposed to be a fawning and empty not-really-a-discussion. Likewise for "I bought HD DVD!"

Keep the versus stuff in the versus thread.

I personally find the questioning of everyone who buys a Blu-ray player to be kind of obnoxious. Most of the people here are pretty bright, and if one of 'em picks up a Blu-ray deck (or an HD DVD player), they know what they're getting into.

I have no problems with anyone getting a BD player at all. Just curious what the reasoning would be for those who already have an HD DVD player. I think I'd question a "BD person" the same way.

I guess it's how some people feel about bisexuals. I just don't get it.

Next Friday is a big day. No one knows if it's a guarantee that people who buy a PS3 will buy movies. However, it could give Blu-ray a boost as they will suddenly get a big increase in capable players overnight. Not to mention that Xmen 3 will be advertised and on sale just before it hits. It'll be $22.99 at Best Buy.

I'm still skeptical about its playback performance. I mean, there's ALOT of stuff crammed into that box. Not so sure everything will be working perfectly right away and lasting. But I will get one next year. Games is the main reason though. And it'll give me a chance to hear some feedback on its performance.

The exact same reason they bought an HD DVD player, I imagine.
