I'm sure this is already known, but will the PS3 do 720p or 1080i over component for either games or bluray discs or will you have to use a HDMI cable?

It will output all the same signals over component including 1080p. Not DVDs though due to the restrictions on those.

Do bluray discs already have the restrictions which do not allow the signal to be sent out through component at high def resolutions?

So you're saying that it will play bluray discs at 720p over component?

Sorry for my confusion. I hadn't been interested in the format or system until recently so I'm just getting into it.

I assume so.

I haven't been interested in BD since January or February.

Yeah, you shouldn't have any problems sending a 720p signal over component for Blu-ray discs, of course SD-DVD's are a whole 'nother story.

Cool. Thanks for the replys. I don't care about standard DVDs as I will not be using it to play them. I probably won't even be buying too many Blu-Ray discs and don't want to have to run another HDMI cable through my entertainment center. I already have the PS2 component cables and an optical cable ran.

Just because IGN posts it today doesn't mean that it's new news.

When a recent issue of the Japan only issue of Famitsu confirms that only Composite will be shipped on consoles in Japan, means its new to me. No where in this thread did i see that Ps3 will ship only with composite. You should read that IGN article more closely.

Was it ever confirmed if the PS3 will have any kind of analog 5.1 capabilities?

The pics on Sony's website show an optical output, a funky proprietary thingy, and HDMI. That's it, unless you count the power cord.

So, in other words, it's useless for advanced audio for those of us who have receivers with analog inputs but without HDMI.

Um, not to take sides. But the Xbox is even more limited. These are game machines, not movie machines. Movies should only be an afterthought for us. Or a cheap way to wait out the first couple years of inflated prices.

Read today that the PS3 doesn't even have an IR port. So if you have a universal remote like a Harmony, it won't work with the PS3. You are stuck using the Bluetooth PS3 remote.

I plan on getting an optical audio cable, and a monster HDMI to DVI cable on Ebay. Both, together should run me about 20 bucks along with shipping. I saw good monster cables on ebay for 9.99. My TV only has DVI in.
