Sounds awesome. If thats the case you had better not ever attend a Blu-Ray event though.

Ha. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. BD wasn't smart enough to do events like this.

It was Toshiba's idea to do this promotional tour at the beginning of the year that led to my interest in HD DVD and the guy who gave me the pens is pretty responsible for it. I thanked him for doing such a good job and for "showing me the light." Of course, I'm sure a lot of people would like to beat the shit out of him for it. ;)

There wasn't any BD-bashing from anyone. There wasn't a ton of new information. I did get to see some trailers for HD DVD and WB that were brand new. And, of course, saw some "exclusive clips." :)

If anyone wants to ask any questions, I'd be happy to say what I can about it. We were told what things we couldn't repeat, though.

Overall, they're a great group of guys and I thank them profusely for doing it. The Pioneer Elite that we watched everything on was .

Supermallet 10-12-06 12:02 AM

Pioneer Elite? Was it the 1080p plasma?

Yes.

They also had the Panasonic BD player there...but it was never used.

Supermallet 10-12-06 12:09 AM

Heh. I've heard great things about that Pioneer. But it's mucho expensivo.

digitalfreaknyc 10-12-06 12:13 AM

Btw...i did ask about the WB titles. No WB titles will be re-encoded for BD. They will be exactly the same on BD and HD DVD. There won't be any other HD extras on the BD. BD will be getting the same 30gb version that HD DVD is getting.

Paramount, on the other hand, is a different story. I guess it's possible that they may be getting other encodes.

What a waste of a BD-50.

Supermallet 10-12-06 12:17 AM

Well, we know MI3 is VC-1 on HD and MPEG-2 on BD.

No. He meant that it will be encoded in VC1 using BD specs (not MI3).

Supermallet 10-12-06 12:22 AM

Ohhhh.

You bastard! Only women are allowed to tease me like that.:)

Nice hint, though. Sounds like Lions Gate or Disney are about to give Blu-rry the finger. That'll help justify the claim that 150 additional titles are due out before the end of the year.

I never said that.

Qui Gon Jim 10-12-06 09:50 AM

OK. If LG comes out next week, I am finding an A1 somewhere, under the assumption that Disney will flip by the end of January. Reading between the lines, it sounds like Fox is rethinking their position as well, perhaps that is the "one year" thing DFNYC is eluding to.

PS: Can I get me one of those pens? :)

Buy a player and I'll personally send you one of the pens plus the 3 discs I've made. ;)

And you guys are reading too much into my statements. :)

Oh and that was definitely mentioned last night: all the 1g are definitely sent out. Out of the warehouse. Once they're gone, that's it. There will also be a lot more G2 machines made and they admitted that they wished they could have gotten more of the G1's out.

RockStrongo 10-12-06 10:05 AM

Did they speak to the performance of the G2 units?

Im curious if it will be on the same level of quality as the A1/XA1 in regards to upscaling standard dvds.

I would assume that is at least equal, but this is a huge point in my decision to upgrade my A1 when the XA2 comes out.

Ok, maybe we are. But the way I see it, it's either a formerly Blu-rry exclusive studio announcing support for HD-DVD or a major title announcement by a studio already supporting HD-DVD. Either way, I can't wait to find out.

No. I honestly don't think anyone asked because pretty much everyone had the G1. We did get spec sheets for both G2 machines.

RockStrongo 10-12-06 11:48 AM

I just preordered the XA2 from Robert....great deal!

It should go nicely with my new Sammy 71in 1080p!!

You're an ass. You still didn't answer my questions :)

1) why are you telling us in this thread?

2) congrats!

3) what made you switch so easily???

Haha....well, i have a 1080p tv now, so the avs deal was just too good to pass up....im sure I can get a decent price on ebay for my A1 when the time comes....I still have the original box, manual and so on.

digitalfreaknyc 10-12-06 11:56 AM

But the 1080p doesn't matter as long as the tv is.

You'll definitely have to let us know how it is.

Since the XA2 is native 1080p and my tv accepts native 1080p, then no upconversion would take place (like with the A1 where the 1080i is upconverted to 1080p by the tv).

It probably wont be a huge difference, but the other features (decreased load time too!) make it worth it to me.

Im also hoping that it handles dvd-rs better....mine still doesnt like them sometimes....I have to load 2 or 3 times before some dvd-rs will read.

you have to pet it. Talk nice to it. Don't you know this by now? :)

is there anyone else planning on getting the G2?

I was totally fucking with you. Don't take me seriously on that. I don't know anything about an announcement next week. I learned more about the possible switches from people I've talked to offline. To be honest, Amir didn't really comment on it although I was the one that flat-out asked. There were a lot of things said that I wouldn't discuss out on an open forum but that was more about the inner workings and things that went on behind the scenes with HD, BD and the companies involved.

That and the clips from 4 discs that haven't been released yet. ;)

Well, technically, there is no upconversion involved, only deinterlacing. So, unless the TV uses a poor grade of deinterlacer, then there will be zero visible difference between a 1080i and 1080p signal.

Still, I can understand your desire to eliminate any unnecessary steps in the video path. And we anxiously await your review of the XA2!

The A2 will be out in a couple of weeks. The XA2 won't be out until December. It will be a long wait but we'll have the reviews of the A2, Xbox add-on and PS3 to keep us busy.

Interesting. I just realized...The A2 comes out this month. Xbox add-on next month. XA2 in december. Then probably the chinese manufacturers in the next few months of 2007. Very very interesting.

I bet one of those is HP4....since WB announced it for France already for Dec 5th....I bet we will get the announcement soon for a Dec 5th release or before.

True....that makes sense. The tv is the HL-S7178W

Yeah, home theater is my only vice so I have to have the latest and greatest. I dont play golf or have a cocaine addiction though its almost as expensive. ;)

HD DVD Promo Group put out a press release today saying that HD DVD is outselling Blu-Ray 3:1. That's it folks.

Also, you didnt state the facts correctly...

During the month of August alone, HD DVD movies outsold all other high definition formats by a factor of nearly three
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/061012/sfth049.html?.v=79

I wonder if pre-orders are even a factor in this. I have probably 10-15 preorders already.

What amazes me is that they go on to say that F&F Tokyo Drift is the fastest selling yet with 30% of stock sold in the first day. That just isn't a movie I see selling like that. I would have thought Batman Begins would have that honor.

You know exactly what he's getting at by saying it and I hope the mods take care of him accordingly.

Why no one ignores Josh just like Blitz and the others that came before him, I'll never understand.

Most likely pre-orders are not counted AND this research was done before Batman Begins was released.
