Getting an HDTV for graduation gift

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/tv.../lcdtv/n2060w/

I was thinking of getting this.

Basically I need it for movies of course, a second monitor for my laptop, and a tv for a PS3.

Is this a good choice as far as hdtv goes?

Is there anything better that's $500 or below?

When are you graduating? If it's January, I'd definitely wait until then to buy one.

For $500, I'd go with a brand known for their TVs, like Sharp or Samsung.
I would probably wait until you had $700 or so and could get a 26" HDTV. At 20" it's really not worth it. To see the difference you'd have to sit no more than three feet away. At 26" it's slightly better. Trust me, that 6" makes a very very big difference. Currently 26" HDTVs are $650 to $850 so I have no doubt this price will drop as time goes on.

At least wait around until Black Friday and see if somebody puts a larger set on sale. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 32" Olevia's go for around $500-700 somewhere. The Bus is right, 20" isn't really worth it.

I already graduated college two weeks ago.

I was also considering waiting but wasn't entirely sure.

What if I get like a crt that's 26 inches or slightly bigger?

Anything on sale then?

I don't really need anything big since I will mainly use this for my room and my room is literally a walk-in closet.

Also it would mainly be used as a monitor for my 12' powerbook.

CRT is a bad idea, especially if it truly is a walk-in closet. LCDs take up much less space, and are really the more sensible choice for the price and size. Either way, I agree that you should wait at least until Black Friday.

It looks like you really just need a computer monitor. Buy a 20" Dell LCD, it has direct video inputs (composite, S-video, VGA). It's only $399.

You dont need anything big but there in lies the dilemma. At 20", there doesnt appear to be much of a difference between a Standard Definition TV and an HDTV to the naked eye. As that size goes up so does the difference in quality to the naked eye. My advice to you is to not get a HDTV at 20" but instead buy an awsome Computer monitor instead that you can hook your PS3 up to. Buy a Apple Cinema Display or something. Again a 20" HDTV is almost self defeating, the image is so small that your eyes can barley tell the difference between HD & SD.

So to sum it up, If you absolutly have to stay below like 25" the I would get a high quality computer monitor. If you can go with something like a 27" then get a HDTV. Just dont get a 20" HDTV.

PS...

Anyone know what the biggest TV that Viewsonic makes? Do all of their TVs have 1080p capability or are they 720p? Thanks

Interesting....I thought they made a 60" LCD. I could have sworn my friend who works for Viewsonic said that. Maybe I was dreaming or maybe he meant Plasma.

They might have made a larger one and discontinued it, or are planning to release one. That's just the biggest one I found on the site.

These are all good suggestions but way beyond the guy's budget. You can't get a good Apple Cinema Display for $500.

(Also, the Dell LCDs are the exact same thing and much much less).

Sorry but to me 37" is pretty damn small for a TV. You aren't really going to see that much of a difference unless you get something 50" or bigger. 37" is a great bedroom tv, if that's what your looking for though, but not a living room. You need a 50-65 incher for that.

By the way...where I can go to get a 65" LCD 1080P? Best brand?

I don't think there are any LCDs that size, only plasma. Anyway, we can't all be rich like you.
