At least 50 Fox/MGM Blu-Ray discs by end of the year

According to this post at AVS from HTF owner Ron Epstein:

I am at a Fox Blu-Ray event here in Los Angeles.

As one of the biggest supporters of HD-DVD I can tell you
confidently that Blu-Ray is about to be launched in a HUGE
way and that a 50GB title is about to be released from Fox.

I can also tell you that at least Fox has absolutely no plans
at this time to cross over to HD-DVD. They do plan, however,
to have at least 50 Fox/MGM titles out by year's end on Blu-Ray.

I'll have more to tell you on my website in a few days.
Well, I'll be looking forward to these. Definitely cancelling my X-Men 3 SD preorder at least.

Okay, let's try this again without the distractions and the sidetracks.

I'm interested to see how much space Fox uses on a 50Gb disc. I imagine a lot of special features in the last few years have been shot in hi-def so I wonder if they'd be willing to go back and recompress them at 1080p.

The news that Fox won't support HD has me concerned, though. Whatever these titles are, Fox and MGM have a fantastic library between them and it would a shame to miss out because of the short-sightedness of all these HD companies involved. However if Fight Club is in the list of titles to come out, sign me up for Blu-Ray!!!

Hopefully they'll be putting out some of those DVHS titles, which are reportedly of such high quality. Alien in particular should be fantastic.

I think of the ones mentioned on DVD File and a few other places, the lists are fairly close to the titles they have put on DVHS.

Another note today from Ron at HTF:

Fox is highly committed to Blu-Ray. They made a point
of addressing the copy protection factor.

They are not considering HD-DVD at this time.

From what I am hearing, the studio has an unbelievable
slate of new titles that will be announced over the next
few months. Despite its initial Blu-Ray releases, the studio
is stepping up efforts to release PRIME titles that people.
I think people are going to be very happy about some of
the titles due to be announced shortly.
Hopefully Die Hards & some Alien titles will be in that prime group. What's so terrible about their initial wave? I'll pick up Speed, Kingdom of Heaven and Ice Age 2 for sure. Maybe The Transporter as well. I hope no one was expecting Star Wars to be announced this early.

The only thing that I thought was "terrible" about their initial wave is the dropping of extras vs. the SD versions. I have an interest in KoH, Speed, and even Fantastic Four. But having to supplement, rather than replace, a SD DVD is a big negative to me.

Same with me, if they'd include the extras I'd be all over em. As it is, I guess I'll be waiting a few yrs for rereleases. (and hopefully lower prices)

There's gotta be a rerelease of F4 to coincide with the sequel's theatrical or BD release next yr, so that one won't be too long of a wait at least.

Extras haven't interested me much for a few years now. There aren't enough hours in the day to watch "making a movie 101" for the 60th time.

OK, I thought the despite he mentioned was referring to title name quality, so maybe they will increase the extras as well. I never cared about extras either, since I don't even have the time to watch the movies themselves, but to each their own. I just want the movie in HD.

I hope I never see an extra again if it means DTS-HD MA @ 24-bit for all fox titles!

I still have a tough time believing the "copy protection" angle FOX sticks with. In a year, whichever format has the most backers, there will be ways around it. Perhaps FOX should never have gotten into DVD. Obviously the copy protection kept them from making billions.

I don't know about that.

I use to prefer less extras in favor of superior PQ and AQ, but if the space is there, then there's no excuse for not having extras.

I just finished watching IME on T3 and it made the movie experience that much more enjoyable. The whole family was intrigued by it, including my girlfriend... who pretty much dislikes my HD-DVD collection.

I defintely want the extras as well. I don't want to be forced to keep the SD versions just for a couple of extras. If I can get $8 for the SD DVD on DVD Planet it makes paying $17.99 on Amazon for the HD DVD a much easier pill to swallow.

If PQ and AQ are an issue then bring on the 2 disc sets.

I'm not sure I understand this logic. You won't keep an HD DVD and a DVD, but you will take two HD DVDs? That is stll two discs, regardless.

1) The convenience of having everything in one 'package', even if it's spread across two discs.

2) Maybe you can get a few bucks for the old DVD on eBay if you can completely replace it with an HD DVD.

3) If you don't already own a movie on DVD but it's something you're especially interested in, you can just buy the HD DVD if it has all of the extras ported over rather than feeling obligated to buy the same movie on two separate formats to get everything.

Fox added a few titles to the coming soon list, no dates though:

From Hell
Rising Sun
Entrapment
The Sentinal
Ice Age: The Meltdown
Flight of the Phoenix

I'd probably buy From Hell and Ice Age 2 but thats it. This slate won't see me buying a Blu-Ray player. Where's Alien.

If you click on "View All Titles" it will give you the complete listing (you are missing some) and the dates.

The only other title I see under coming soon is The Omen:666. Didn't we confirm that it was being released Nov 14th?

Hddigest already listed these titles:

11/14:
Behind Enemy Lines
Fantastic Four
Kingdom of Heaven
Kiss of the Dragon
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The Omen
Speed
The Transporter

11/28
Windtalkers
The Usual Suspects

12/5
Rocky
Bulletproof Monk

I would've gotten From Hell and The Sentinel depending on the quality and extras situations. Ahhh well.

Looks like right now the only Fox discs I would have gotten would be Usual Suspects and Kingdom of Heaven: DC. Considering how many Fox movies I love, that isn't good.

Does anyone know if Home Alone is going to be released this Holiday season? I would love to go from the crap non-anamorphic disc direct to hi-def and skip the upcoming SD rerelease.

I doubt it. That would be a title that would definitely get a dvd rerelease to coincide and there's been no mention of that.
