What Players Can Play HD-DVD Discs Please Clarify

There are a lot of HD DVD Players out there but im pretty sure they are all
upscalers. HD DVD UPSCALERS are DVD Players than can take the existing
DVD Format and give it a much higher resolution im not sure the specs on
this but im pretty sure it's the same resolution as a HD DVD Disc which is
an upconversion from 480i/p DVD-Video to 720p, 768p, or 1080i.

With so many HD-DVD Format DVD'S being released even in your local
walmart, targets etc. I wonder just why are they releasing them when
the only HD-DVD Format Players i see cost $500.00.

My question is well.. there only seem to be a couple of DVD Players
that are capable of playing the HD-DVD Format.. Are the DVD Players
that claim to be High Definition DVD players Capable of playing HD-DVD
Discs?

The prices are just ridiculous and if i can find HD DVD Player for a good
price i will buy it problem is.. it seems almost non-existant.

And i really dont see why they are releasing so many films if not for the
rich.

Are there any fair priced HD Format Compatible Players or do i have to
wait with the rest of the world 2 years until the prices come down?

It depends what you mean by "fair price." They can be had for around $400.

Currently the only players are made by Toshiba and RCA. Others are coming. They will not be cheaper than this.

There are only 4 HD-DVD models, 1 by RCA and 3 by Toshiba. No player should say "HD-DVD" on it unless it is a real HD-DVD player. You will have to read closely, perhaps. And if it is under $399 at this time, you can be pretty much assured it is not an HD-DVD player.

Not to nitpick, but I found my RCA at WalMart for $325. It can be found, but it is rare.

What Players Can Play HD-DVD Discs Please Clarify

..Incredible, so the market is literally just starting to try and appeal to
customers.

I can hardly believe there is no CLARIFICATION for this on the net anywhere
people are buying all these HD DVD Players thinking they will Play HD-DVD
Format discs..! Boy are they going to be pissed when they learn about
the blue laser technology. HD-DVD Format is an alomost completely
different disc structurewise.

I think it would be a good idea for now to look into a High Defninition DVD
Player which reportedly can upscale your normal DVDS and upscale the
resolution to play High Definition (an upconversion from 480i/p DVD-Video to 720p, 768p, or 1080i).

It wont be the same but im sure it will
be quite an improvement for now and less costly.

Too Bad, i really was Dying to see ENTER THE DRAGON, Great Forum

Thanks

They say "hd-upconversion." They do not say HD DVD on them.

Unfortunately there will be confusion over a great many things until the format war is settled. Once that happens, SD DVD players will go away and they'll all end up being HD.

There's plenty of clarification out there. You just haven't looked for it in the right places.

Here's some on this very site:

I have to disagree with this entire post. While it can be a little confusing to the people just stepping into the HD waters, there is plenty of clarification out there and anyone looking to educate themselves on this entire HD format thing can easily do so in very litlle time because what seems very confusing at first quicky becomes very easy to understand.

With that being said if anyone is going out to the stores and looking to buy a player before putting in any time to educate themsleves on just what to get then I feel no pity on that person when they quickly become confused, even frustrated on all of the different so called HD options there are. If people havent learned by now that when investing large sums of money into something and I mean anything wether it be a new car, a new motorcycle a new HDTV Etc..that you should do some research into that product so you can make sure your getting what your looking for then I have no reply for those people.

The internet has made things such as this trivial and anyone could easily find the difference between these formats by simply going to google. So while you feel this impending doom coming where people are going to get screwed or extremely frustrated by buying products that dont do what they think they do, I have a little more faith in my fellow man. I fully expect that 99% of the people that end up buying a HD player at least know the difference in the competing formats and that thier machine willnot be able to play any HD title period.

As for the upconversion, that will never beat the real deal. If your happy with a somewhat better picture than what you have been getting then you should just stay with Upconverting. Its all about what were happy with but you really should know that there is no comparison between the 2. Just because your player is now outputting movies in 720p or even 1080i, it does not mean that the quality between the 2 is even remotly close, which it isnt.

By the way, a good upscaling DVD player will cost you around 200 bucks which isnt that big of a difference between the low end HD-DVD players.

Simply put, if a player doesn't feature this logo, it won't play HD DVDs:

Similarly, if a player doesn't feature this logo, it won't play Blu-ray Discs:

These logos are used in every print and television ad for the new HD formats. It is incumbent upon consumers to take the time to familiarize themselves with the logos and what they represent if they intend to make an informed purchase. Otherwise, caveat emptor.
