HD DVD imports

My understanding is that besides the US, the other two big import markets are Japan and Europe (for non-R1 DVDs), and to a lesser extent Korea/Australia/etc. Blu-Ray is (smartly?) making US/Japan the same region. HD-DVD, if it does region codes* should make US and Europe the same region at least.
* I can see how region codes are a necessity for theatrical releases, but I do wish all catalogue titles are released region-free. To have four or five language tracks (or six subtitle tracks) can only help sales.

In two of Freaks posts he quotes industry people as saying it has not been decided whether or not to use region coding, and in the interview it sounds like region coding is very much a possibility. So the thread title as currently written is a bit misleading.
This would be huge if they decided to go without the region coding, but I wonder how many people besides folks like us that frequent places like DVDTalk and AVS will take advantage of it.
I'm sure both formats will have a region free player eventually, but I don't think one is currently on the horizon for either side.

Also, Equilibrium is a miramax title (so far only supports BD) here in the US and yet the Japanese HD-DVD version is region free. So, theres another angle.

But then you would not be able to play U.S. HD DVDs. You would be stuck buying all of your movies as imports and, I believe, that is a bit more expensive.
You are right, there is no region coding at this point, but then there is also nothing to import at this point either. By the time there is, there might be region coding, thus the word MIGHT in the title thread.

Won't making the U.S. and Europe the same region run into problems with the PAL format? I believe that is why Sony made Japan and Europe separate for BD.

)Also, according to Amir with MS, the current batch of discs do not have region coding. So, even if future discs have region coding, the current batch will still play on all players.

Besides, right now, there is enough evidence that these initial titles WILL be playable in the US in our current players based on no region coding. So, again, it doesnt need to be changed.
Personally, I think the point of the thread is that some BD us-only titles will be available overseas and capable of being imported to the US (whether future region coding happens or not).

Talk about grasping at straws. Changing the title of this thread doesn't change the fact that I'll be able to watch Terminator 2 on something OTHER than BD

I wonder though, will there be any Universal titles that could be distributed overseas to BD or does Universal distribute all of their titles worldwide??
I havent heard any news of this, but BD supporters are few right now or just silent.

If they're still using MPEG2 or if they're still using a smaller disc size, it's going to most likely be inferior.
Bcolon should be able to understand that. That POSSIBILITY. BD people live for what possibly could be. One day. Maybe. Possibly.

Even if the HD DVD forum decides to implement region coding in the future, you can always just roll back your player's firmware to an earlier version (like any of the current ones) that doesn't enforce it.

Even if they eventually do go forward, the discs themselves won't be encoded so they will theoretically always work.
