BD doesn't have to look as good as HD, it has to look better to succeed.

My LCD accepts 1080p directly; it's the TV's native resolution.

It IS possible that they might. It may not be the players or the encoding. It could be the discs themselves.

You can look at MPG2 on HD DVD and it doesn't look as bad.

I"m going to respond to my own post with a posting from Cliff over at AVS:

Here's my on-going disagreement time-line...
Warner's August 1st MPEG2 Blu-rays (if that doesn't turn things around for BD we wait for: )
Pioneer's September release of the BDP-HD1 (if that doesn't turn things around for BD we wait for: )
Sony's October release of the BDP-S1 (if that doesn't turn things around for BD we wait for: )
Possibly some fall releases that finally utilize the VC-1 or H.264 codec (if that doesn't turn things around for BD- and it can't as the releases will look identical to the HD-DVDs released -we wait for: )
Sony's November launch of the PS3 (if that doesn't turn things around for BD we wait for: )
The theoretical launch of BD-50, most likely (if at all) not until sometime in 2007 (if that doesn't turn things around for BD we get to enjoy: )
People continuing to blindly preach the holy gospel of BD, a format based almost entirely on faith.

My question becomes, how many chances are people going to continue to give Sony just to get their format to match the quality that is already available now in HD-DVD and is there a point where these people will give up the ghost? I see things now as every day that BD is given more room to mature and fulfill its promises (without guarantees of it ever happening, mind you) is more time wasted in repairing format war damage and the worse things will get.

I went by my local CC and they had Blu-ray all setup in 1080P (so they say) and it looked very bad. They allowed me to put in a movie (I chose XXX) and I must say it looked rather poor. No Kidding! The picture quality reminds me of Laser Disc! Why do all the disc covers look the same? They just have the movie stamped on the top of it with no picture. Weak if you ask me!
