PCMag: HD-DVD vs. BD Article

Caught this article on Fox News today, they pulled it from PCMag:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,201386,00.html

Nothing spectacularly new, except for this statement: "Eighty-four percent of all the movies released last year were made by studios that have announced support for Blu-ray," says Jim Sanduski, senior vice president of marketing for Samsung's Audio and Video Products Group. "That is a huge strike against HD DVD."

They go on to say that there are titles being released in both formats, that just sounds like an awfully huge number IMHO.

I wouldn't even want to see 84% of the movies released last year.

A slightly more useful number would be of the 84%, what percentage will also release on HD-DVD.

The very next line in the article touches on this point...

Right, that's what I was trying to say when it says that there's a lot of crossover, but still 84%?! I can't rattle them off the top of my head, but aren't there major studios that are HD-DVD exclusive that represent more than 16% of the market share?

The only exclusive HD DVD studio is Universal.

Holy cow, I was not aware of that. If that's true then that number actually sounds correct, I'm now wondering about the HD-DVD percentage.

That statistic sounds impressive, but is ultimately meaningless. Neither format will live or die based on 2005/6 theatrical releases. Price, quality, and overall depth of catalog are the main issues.

Still, we're gonna rot on the vine unless some other studios cross over.

Fox is supporting Blu-Ray. That report may not be 100% unbiased.

With Blu-Ray, "announced support" isn't money in the bank.

Right now as I see it, only two studios support Blu-Ray... Sony and Lion's Gate.

Yeah, and they're not taking into account how extensive the support is. With Warner, I don't think they're going to release nearly as many titles on BD as they will on HD-DVD (unless, and until, BD eventually wins).
