I already posted some of what I'm sure is in your post in the HD DVD vs BD vs... thread.

Can't tell if it's the same as what you posted because your ass is blocked.

They should probably go there.

Blu-Ray's gonna look phenomenal. Hell it's probably more work to make the stuff look like crap.

Just get on with delivering a Universal Player so I can play whatever I want.

Eventually, it will. But as long as they are releasing single layer discs with MPEG-2 compression and clipped blacks/whites, it won't be quite as phenomenal as it could, and I'm not so sure it will look as good as HD DVDs featuring more efficient VC-1 compression sans clipping.

Well there's three things I learned over on AVS yesterday.

1) The Bluray demo shows Mpg2 "artifacting" around hi-contrast edges.

2) The Sony Mpg2 encoding is "clipping" blacker-than-black and whiter-than-white information from the movies before they are copied to the disc. This is not like the HD DVD players clipping (which was fixed by a firmware update) because the data is dropped for good by the Bluray encoders.

3) The Bluray launch has effectively been pushed back to August now, as the Samsung player, which was the only one shipping before then, has been delayed.

egads (puts head in hands, shaking it slowly, and sighs...)

1) has already been disproven - read further on AVS.

I think it's more accurate to say it's been disputed, not necessarily disproved.

(I have not seen the demo and have no idea whether it had artifacts or not. Even if it did, that may not be indicative of what official software releases will look like.)
