DVD Talk Limited Edition
Something tells me that is going to be cumbersome to deal with.

Which means HDMI is another add-on you have to pay for...and how much will that be?
It's incredibly silly to release an HD-DVD drive without HDMI in any capacity..unless as an additional expense.

It's silly unless you know for sure that it will work correctly and how much you'll have to pay for it. I'm f*cking sick of MS splitting everything you want to the most amount of pieces and then screwing you with incremental costs that they hope you don't notice.

This HD-DVD add-on is no less limited than the full-version PS3 at playing their respective HD formats. Both are going to be pretty shitty, IMO (though IMO all first generation Blu-Ray players appear like they will suck in one form or another).

Well to be fair the $600 PS3 will have HDMI of some kind and that can at least pass LPCM and DD+. However, I would never buy a console as my main movie player. It will get you by if you are on a budget, but if you are on a budget maybe its best to wait on HD video.

HDMI 1.2 won't pass either format (HDMI 1.3 is needed). Nor will optical. And they don't have any analog 5.1 outs. What am I missing that would allow HD sound out of the PS3?

Where did you get the info that the PS3 won't have HDMI 1.3?
http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/03/24/gdc2006_ps3_no_hdmi/
Recently it was announced that the PS3 will use HDMI 1.3, which will use an expansion of the audio channels and offer Dolby TrueHD as well as DTS-HD.

A quote from the article Grimfarrow linked to above:
QUOTE: But it certainly highlighted that Sony has still work to do - not only to finalize the AACS spec, but also to accelerate the availability to HDMI 1.3 and to educate customers that they only can run HD video and audio if they have a HDMI 1.3 capable TV. TO HERE
So does this mean that if my TV has an HDMI 1.1 connector, I will not be able to connect the PS3 to my TV via HDMI?
My head hurts.

Actually, he's wrong. HDMI 1.3 is backwards compatible with HDMI 1.1. So no idea what he was going on about. Nothing to worry about...it will work with your TV fine...

I wasn't "going on" about anything, Grim. I was just asking a question about the article you linked to, which clearly states "they only can run HD video and audio if they have a HDMI 1.3 capable TV." So it sounds like the article got it wrong.
Thanks for the response, Adam!
