This is exactly what I am waiting for....The second generation players with all technical glitches corrected. And hopefully, with other manufacturers to select from as well, other than Toshiba, and RCA. Like Denon for instance.

But the first generation will be corrected. Firmware will upgrade it.

...but to what extent problems can be corrected, and which problems Toshiba decides to address, remains to be seen. I'm hopeful, but we can't bank on what changes we'll see and when until we actually have 'em in-hand.

Completely agree. However, there's someone who actually works for Microsoft who's posting at avsforum. I guess I put more weight on that than people speculating.

Remember that DVD Talk does offer ignore lists -- if someone's bothering you, try making use of that instead.

I have read the thread. Yours was the only mention of Microsoft. Guess I'll never know. Typo?

You mean, what does Microsoft have to do with Toshiba? Was that the question?

The answer is that Microsoft is passing on all information to Toshiba.

I saw the BR and HD-DVD setups at CES this year and nothing excited me. I guess I'm used to the quality now from looking at too many HD movie trailers. I'll still look into the tech when it arrives in Australia later this year, but won't buy anything for at least another couple of years. I plan on running my dvd's and existing setup into the ground before I adopt

Word. Insert Symbol command to lookup the proper code, copy to browser. Just be sure to pick a normal font, like Times New Roman. If you use a Symbol font, it may show up as something else for some people.

I miss Apple. I could just type it with an Option-N or something on a Mac.

[Off topic] You can type foreign characters directly: on a Wintel machine, just type Alt-164 to get a lower case eñe, Alt-165 to get an upper case EÑE. The number has to be typed on the number pad, not the number row above the letters. For dozens more symbols and foreign characters check out this website.

Some other handy ones:
¢ (cents) Alt-155
º (degrees) Alt-167
• (bullet) Alt-0149
— (long dash) Alt-0151

One caveat: when using Firefox and the DVD Talk compose window, the Alt key causes problems and one has to cut and paste the symbol from Word or some other place. [/Off topic]
