Sony delays Blu-Ray titles
http://www.videobusiness.com/article...tml?nid=2705&&
Sony has pushed back Blu-Rays launch from May 23 to June 20. Interesting but not unexpected. Who really believed they would launch titles without anything to play them on.

The only title not delayed is Underword Evolution. It is still set for June 6. It apparently will have all the features of the DVD. Will anyone buy this with nothing to play it on for two weeks.

They're were actually trying to show that the can release a disc. Or trying to show that a Sony announcement actually means something.
Originally on imdb.com, but from a thread on dvinfo.net:

'Sony To Release Hi-Def Movies -- With No Players
In an announcement that left many analysts scratching their heads, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment President Benjamin Feingold announced Wednesday that the company will release its first batch of movies on high-definition Blu-ray discs on May 23 -- even though no players will be available at that time on which to play them. Sony has indicated that the first players may not be available until November. In an interview with Home Media Retailing, Feingold said, "We realize there may be some delays on the hardware side, but we are going to honor our commitment to release movies when we said we would." Questions immediately arose concerning what retailers will do with the disks when they receive them. Said Feingold: "There are two schools of thought: A dealer could have them for publicity purposes, to prime the market, or we can ship them later, when hardware is on the market. But the important point is, we can meet the date -- that's the key."'

Ben Feingold, head of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment worldwide, in a statement. “ In an effort to ensure a more coordinated launch, we will deliver the first eight SPHE Blu-ray titles -- 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, A Knight's Tale, The Last Waltz (MGM), Resident Evil Apocalypse and XXX -- to retail on June 20, along with the first day-and-date with DVD title, Underworld Evolution.”

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the initial Blu-ray titles more for the "PS3 gaming community"? These all seem like "game" titles if you know what I mean.
The initial HD DVD titles and the rest of the May launch titles seem to be more for mainstream moviegoers.

I see "video game" type movies coming on Blu-ray -- at least initially.
I see more general mainstream movies coming on HD DVD -- at least initially. There seems to be more of a balance. Some are action, some are drama, etc.
It almost seems Sony is marketing to the video game market with initial Blu-ray.

Blu-ray isn't so much catering to the video game market, as much as they're picking out titles that have a visual "whiz-bang" to them, that people will be expected to want to try out HD with initially. Think titles like T2, Fifth Element, insert any other flashy action movie in this space.
As another poster said above, HD-DVD titles seem to be more of a mixed release kinda thing, not all flashy action titles.

I would say it doesn't matter as everyone expected a Spring release and when they didn't do it, they called it a delay, iirc, as did everyone reporting on it.Actually, if I tell you I am aiming for a Spring launch and then tell you that it won't happen for another 6 months, the obvious question is, "why the delay?"
