In the long run maybe, but right now the players are still hard to find and Netflix can't keep the HD DVDs available. Many people have definitely jumped on board with HD DVD for now. With Blu-ray's advantage in studio support and disc space I don't think Toshiba had any other choice to compete. It may not work out in the long run, but it was the only chance they had. If they can continue to move units they may pull in more studio support and make this battle a long one. Time will tell.

I'm glad at least 1 person caught it

I think what Toshiba may really be banking on is people who are marginal videophiles seeing their player on the shelf next to a Blu-ray player, both touting HD playback, but selling for half the price. Whether that will be a successful strategy or not will probably not be clear until the fall, if even then.

Nope, nothing like that. The video and audio are pretty much exactly the same. the X adds RS232 connection, lighted remote, I think better construction, motorized front panel, couple other minor things. Unless you need the RS232 control, doesn't appear to be worth it.

Holy crossed wires Batman!

He was asking the difference between the $1800 Pioneer and the $1000 Sony, not talking about the $800 Toshiba XA1 vs the Toshiba $500 A1.

Actually between the Pioneer and Samgung. Both apparently being released on the same day but with $800 price difference. My view is the XA1 is a huge waste of money. If it doesn't add to the video and audio presentation its not worth an extra dime. I am wondering if Pioneers elite is a rip off like the XA1 or if it offers any extra features of genuine use.

Just look at the specs, and you'll very quickly realize the added benefit.
