HD Release Covers are here for both HDDVD and BR

Now I know you can find some of these here and there, but this is a large list of both BR and HDDVD covers. Link is 56k hell, fyi.

Linky

One more thing... If you notice on the back of the HDDVD's, under special features, it says, "480i standard definition." Does that mean that it is a flipper and that one side will play on the current DVD player and the other will play the HDDVD? I mean, if you just dropped $25 for the disc and $1000 for the player so you can get these movies in their 1080p goodness, I don't think that 480i would be considered a, "special feature"......

No, I think it's just pointing out that the extras (featurettes, deleted scenes, etc.) are not in high-definition.

Why does Universal fear using the whole cover, I wonder?

I don't understand your question. It seems as though BR uses a similar front cover layout, just blue.

I mean the area beneath that -- Universal's titles have that interlaced white/gray pattern with the actual art in a 'swoosh', unlike Warner's HD-DVD titles which use the full cover.

Universal took it upon themeselves to add their own touch to their cover art - absolutely horrendous. Hopefully they'll fix that for BR...

I don't care for the BR spines, with the headshots cut out. I hope the blue is a darker blue in person, rather than the brighter aqua tone they have in the art.

To see the dvd art cut and pasted onto the HD versions is pretty dissapointing (unless it was good to begin with, T2, Total Recall, MDB, etc.) For what has to be the cheapest part of the dvd prcoess, you'd think they would put a little more effort into them...

Thanks for the link.

I see HD-DVD cases still have those stupid feet. Rediculous.

I just means the special features are not in HD, just like many special features now aren't anamorphic, etc.

After seeing the release list I honestly have no desire to buy any of those titles. The few I already own would not be on my double dip list. I'm really seeing the HD decision waiting till 2007 when they actually start digging deeper in the catalog for films.

None of those titles interest me either.

However I would love to see HoFD in High Defintion. The cinematography and colours should really be a showcase for High Definition.

I don't see Robocop looking good at 1080p at all. There were lots of miniatures and stop motion animation in the film. I think high def will make these effects look even worse.

Does anybody else hate the blue/red plastic casing? Hopefully when a winner is declared the identification of the format won't have to be so blatant.

I will support HD-DVD if that is the case.
I noticed this as well, a big relief since Amazon still claims they have the coding. Still looked marketed to U.S. and Canada only as the "Dubbed in Quebec" on some discs suggests. However, even videos are marketed that way and they didn't have regional coding.

That's if they choose to support Blu-Ray. I thought Universal supports HD-DVD only. Could be why they added their own personal touch-up with the "The Best in Picture, Sound, and Interactivity" tagline.

Did you think Robocop's effects looked bad in the theaters?

I could care less for the covers, show me the backs with running times, and audio specs.

Does HD-DVD not support DTS on all titles or something? And what exactly is Dolby Digital-Plus? It says it's 5.1, but I'm not sure what the Plus is referring to...

Those feet are indeed rediculous. I much prefer Blu-Ray's packaging, even the aqua blue.

Frankly, both cases are ass. Anything that will make the cases unable to stack evenly next to each other is a stupid mistake. The Blu-Ray logo thing at the top is wider than the rest of the case, but it is not apparent from looking at the pictures. The feet on the HD cases will likely cause the same problem.

I would have really preferred standard DVD packaging, without the ginormous logos at the top.

From looking at the pictures, I'm not sure either BR nor HD-DVD cases will have a problem stacking cleanly next to each other. I don't see a spine side profile to be sure, but it looks like the top part (with the ginormous logo) doesn't stick out any more than the bottom part.

As for the feet, I think it actually might be a good thing. First, I don't think they 'stick out'. If you look, you can see the bottom of the case is curved (not square). The feet look like they are what would be left after you rounded off a case that was square at the bottom. In other words, imagine if the case was square at the bottom, then imagine curving it, but leaving two 'feet' that are still square. If this is true, the feet won't stick out compared to the logo part at the top and they will keep the last HD-DVD on the row from "falling over" (like DVDs do). I think they will act like book ends.

I think earlier shots revealed that the Blu-Ray logo stuck out farther than the rest of the front cover. I'll try to find a pic...

My bad. It is actually the HD cases that have this problem.

non-1080p tvs

Will these play in 1080i or 720p on non 1080p tvs? Of course, I know you need the player but just wondering. Of course, I just bought a 62" 1080i/720p tv. DOH! Maybe I should have spent the extra $800 for 1080p.

:nods: They'll even play in 480i on a standard definition television, if you want.

If you want to play it on a 480i TV though, I think you missed the whole point of the new format.....
