;)

In all seriousness, as long as that front doesn't light up too bright, that player BD player does look sweet.

Pioneer

This would be huge if true. It would essentially put Blu-Ray in the same boat as HD-DVD with a delayed launch. Blu-Ray's situation would be far worse however since it is the hardware that is causing the delay.

I have a hard time believing that none of the major AV news sites like Video Business Online and TWICE would not have this info and be reporting it yet. Were there going to be any other launch players besides the Pioneer and Samsung?

One would think Panasonic as they have been very a vocal partner to Sony within the BDA, but nothing has been announced yet.

The Samsung info is new within the last few hours so we'll probably find out tommorow or Wednesday whats up.

Yes it has.

Remember that the source is just a guy who allegedly works at Crutchfield. And in January he said that Sony representatives at CES had just confirmed to him that the PS3 would only output 1080i.

Not that it can't end up being true, mind you. But until we get some additional confirmation, take it with a grain of salt.

If we are going to discuss Internet ramblings, how about this one from a person who saw a demo:

No matter what you say - even with this demo of BD-DVD, it still looked MUCH BETTER than the HD-DVD demo playing in the front of the store. I was able to tweak and play with both, and no matter what I could sit anyone down and show them the problems in the HD-DVD content which is simply not there in the BD content. This is disturbing as the HD-DVDs are much closer to launch and the BD content is still a ways off. Now, don't get me wrong, this is not an inherent problem with HD-DVD vs. BD-DVD. This is a problem with MPEG-4 vs. MPEG-2. I have said this for a while, having done many, many, many encodes in both formats - MPEG-4 is not there YET. MPEG-2 and VC-1 are clearly superior - though I think in time the MPEG-4 tools may get there - they are clearly not.

You know I haven't been able to see a Blu Ray demo for comparison, but I was definitely underwhelmed by the HD DVD demo. That was on a 42" screen though. I am hoping to check it out again with the final hardware on a bigger screen and with a real HD DVD movie to know for sure, but I will agree the current HD DVD demo disc does not impress.

If you actually read the thread, you'll find a lot of people who counter that opinion.

Where are they having demo's for Blu-Ray now?

Actually, I did read that thread, and there are no counters to what Peter said. What they do offer is possible reasons for the difference, but never a counter - or that MPEG-4 looks better than MPEG-2.

Agreed.

Not sure what the other Josh is talking about or if the attitude is just "typical."

It might be another thread I was thinking of. The same poster spread the same complaints about MPEG4 in multiple threads on AVS. He seems to be one of the very few people who've seen the HD-DVD demo and weren't impressed.

The "artifacts" he claims to have seen were most likely the result of a poorly calibrated TV with its sharpness setting too high.

I saw posts by two people now on AVS claiming they have solid info on the Samsung delay, so we'll see. As for the Panny heres a new update today ....

BluRay

Well, him and darkside, right?

I didn't see any artifacts and I didn't have any way to compare with a Blu Ray player, but I know their display was set up by a Toshiba rep so I don't think any problems can be blamed on a TV not properly set up. BTW, the store employees were mostly of the same opinion as my own and they deal in high end equipment so they know their business. However, they made sure that I understood that the demo was set up on a player that was not final hardware and based on one demo disc with movies like Dukes of Hazzard on it. I will be there at 11am on the 1st for the full HD DVD demo unless it gets delayed. I imagine it will be much more impressive on the large projection screen.
