BluRay on PCs

I know that Apple, Dell and others PC manufacturers support bluray but I did not heard about when this machines will be out.

Any news about when PCs will have bluray drives?

The drives will be out shortly. I know Sony has announced it will be available on their PCs starting in March.

Will they need decoder cards like when DVD drives first came out?

Doubtful, at least for new PCs. Todays CPUs have enough power to process HD video. Older PCs probably won't be able to play them however.

I see there is a chance for decoder cards. Back when DVD comes out, although there are PCs with enough horsepower to play DVD without decoder card, the software developer still had much to learn to make a good software DVD player. Bad video deinterlacing and some other minor issue such as audio not synchronized with video are common back in the day.

Cyberlink has Blu-Ray software out there. I believe Nero does as well. With all the horsepower in todays computers, I doubt a hardware decoder will be necessary.

The upgrade in video card you'll need is one that is HDMI compliant as well as a display that is HDMI compliant as well.

Pioneer also announced Bluray PC drives coming out very soon, Feb or March in Japan. There was a thread with the link, IIRC.

Actualy, you only need a videocard that is HDCP compliant. Most newer videocards already have DVI which can pass a digital signal (required for HDCP). HDMI is not required.

My bad. I mentioned the wrong acronym. Thanks for clearing that up. The big problem will be getting a display that is HDCP compliant.

cdfreaks has just posted an article on the topic:

Few monitors and virtually no graphics cards are HDCP-Ready
